AMD Driver specific for your model GPU or gerneric AMD driver...which one is best to install?

I have a reference MSI HD R6950 2GB. The latest driver listed on MSI 's website, is still version 9.002 --- seen here:

http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R6950-2PM2D2GD5.html#/?div=Driver&os=All

However, if you go to the AMD website itself: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/downloads.aspx

......you can then select the Windows7 (64bit) driver, specific for the Latest AMD Catalyst™ Drivers for Radeon™ HD 7000, HD 6000, HD 5000 Series

When you click that link, it takes you to: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx

As you can see AMD offers version 13.4
Right now, I have 13.4 installed and also 13.4 CAP 1, which is also offered on the same page. I did this because I have a A10 5800K and set them up, so that they both had the same version of the AMD Catalyst. I've since abandoned the iGPU's 7660D and I'm now just using the discrete 6950. Of course, I turned LucidLogix MVP to the OFF setting.

The question is are you better off using the older 9.002 driver specific from MSI's website or better off installing the latest "generic AMD driver (version 13.4) as I did?

It seems to make sense that a newer driver 4/24/2013 is better than one dated 12/17/2012....but maybe I'm wrong.

I notice that when I load Windows 7 (64bit) I'll get a message that "the license installed is not intended for this computer".
I assume it's because it's looking for the MSI specific driver for the 6950 but its finding a generic version of the AMD Catalyst Drivers.

No, you better use the 13.4 WHQL Catalyst from AMD.

Ok...thanks for the reply.

I figured even after I decided not to use the iGPU feature of my 7660D ...it made the most sense to keep the latest driver (13.4) but it bothers me that I get a message that "the license installed is not intended for this computer".

I think if I had the 9.002 MSI driver instead it wouldn't come up anymore, every time I start Windows..... but I can live with a pop up message.... if its no big deal.

  • Have you used this Windows Serial number on a previous computer?
  • Have you done some modifications to the system lately, the one with that Windows?

The message you are referring to has nothing to do with the graphic card or the graphic card driver.

If you have just switched out the motherboard and cpu with a new one, then it is windows that is giving you the message. The copy of windows 7 you had with the old components is tied to them. You will probably have to buy a new copy (serial #)of windows.

No...I haven't done any changes to the motherboard or cpu . I just built this computer fresh about three months ago and installed a sealed box Windows 7 Home Premium, which I then installed with the activation code and help from a phone rep from Microsoft. (I had accidentally installed SP1 before I activated my store bought box, which was not Windows7 SP1...so I had to call Microsoft and they gave me the proper activation code I needed.

I mentioned the graphics card because I did not get this message, not once in the three months of turning the computer on.... until the very first time I booted up with the MSI HD 6950 installed and properly set/working. This is what led me to think it was because the MSI card was expecting the MSI driver to be installed...but I'm a noobie to this stuff.

What does it say if you go here (In the windows activation tab, at the bottom) ?

I was just reading more about this online and saw another thread discussing the issue, so I commented on it

http://www.sapphireforum.com/showthread.php?31154-license-installed-error&p=271037#post271037

What I should say.... is the full pop up message reads: AMD quick stream error ----the license installed is not intended for this computer

I had stated in that thread....I'm running the A10 5800K and just yesterday disabled my iGPU HD 7660D, so it no longer appears in Device Manager in Windows 7.

I made my HD 6950 the primary graphics card (since trying to run both the 7660D and 6950 together using LucidLogix MVP turned ON and was slowing down my 6950).

Anyway..point being, since that change...When I now start my computer, I also get the message as soon as Windows is displaying AMD quick stream error ----the license installed is not intended for this computer

I presume it's because I activated my copy of Windows 7 before I installed the 6950 but WHILE the 7660D was still set, as the primary graphics for my computer build. So Windows may see that the GPU is not matching how the license was registered with Microsoft.

At least that's my take on it.... as I'm starting to research a remedy for the issue.

Ever since I made that change yesterday, now I get that pop up message every time I restart my computer. So far, I just have been closing it. Everything seems to work just fine...but I'd like to remedy this too.

To answer your reply KARLITOS.... It shows
> "Windows is activated" and displays the genuine windows seal in the bottom right corner.

I'm already pretty convinced the problem is because I disabled the 7660D yesterday BUT the license was activated while the 7660D was the only GPU for the computer. Now the license doesn't match the 69590.

I also made some researches yesterday and came accross this web site you linked but haven't found anything conclusive.

Have you uninstalled the old drivers before making the GPU swap.

As a last resort, maybe reformatting and reinstalling Windows could help but that is only a guess.

Good idea..but no, I didn't uninstall the driver for the 7660D but I suppose I could try that.

Both my 2 GPU's were set up to run off version 13.4 of the AMD Catalyst Control Center, since as you mentioned in post #2 that the version I installed is good for the 6000 and 7000 series of cards.

(Also I just might try again to set them up as dual graphics (not cross fired) if I can get it set that the 7660D doesn't slow down my 6950 while gaming.... so I'd prefer to keep the diver "as is" for the 7660D, even though right now its been disabled in the BIOS.)

I suppose could just delete driver Version 13.4 while the 7660D is disabled.... then re-install 13.4 so it just gets applied to the 6950 and see if that makes a difference.

This sort of stuff can really drive you crazy...but always a learning opportunity...that just might work.
