Can you delid a laptop?

I'll be buying a Haswell laptop like....the day it comes out so Im just wondering if you can delid a laptop. Its going to be a Sager gaming laptop, so it could benefit Im sure. I searched a bit and couldn't find anything.

And in case anyone missed it, Haswell seems to be using TIM and having temp probs again so yeah.

yes you can, the question is, how and why? most laptops have their cpu soldered to the mobo, and doesn't allow overclocking.

EDIT: if they use a desktop CPU then yes.

Cooler is always better, right? I'll most likely be replacing the TIM anyway, figured I might as well see if I could delid it too. And I believe Sager laptops are overclockable, but don't quote me on that.

Actually, most laptop CPUs are NOT soldered to the board. They're regular socket based chips just like with desktops. The real question is, how can you delid what has no IHS to begin with? tongue.gif Laptop CPUs are already direct contact cooled. They do this to minimize the height of the chip to allow for as thin a laptop as possible. It also helps with dissipating the heat in such a small form factor. So, the answer is no, you cannot delid a laptop CPU because there's nothing to delid.

I believe most laptops (or at least all the ones I've disassembled) are already delidded, in that the cooling infrastructure usually makes direct contact with the CPU die as is.

I've done it on my sandy bridge laptop and my GPU, which doesn't have an IHS either. It's pretty much the same. The area is smaller so you use a little less paste. The big thing is you don't have a big steel plate protecting the die, so you have to be careful about using too much force when tightening it down. But I've found that both my laptop and GPU have stops in the screws to prevent over tightening...which has actually led to issues in the zotac 670 i believe with not enough mounting pressure..but that's another story:rolleyes:

This. Most manufacturers remove the IHS before assembly if needed. That is probably 10% of mobile chips, but the other 90% are shipped from the manufacturer without one.

Yes, the process is different. Do not use the rice grain method but spread the paste manually with a credit card.

Note, the other reason for the lid is so that end-users don't crack the die. Laptops CPU installation and warranty are handled by the OEM so there is little risk to Intel there.

i would consider paying the $30 and let them do it for a laptop. AS5 is still a decent paste buit the only concern if the company does it will they do a better job than you so its catch 22 lol
