The Last of Us, is it just Uncharted with Zombies? - Page 5

yeah i wasn't a fan of stalker either... again though, we're comparing Apples to Oranges in terms of games... the whole point of Last of Us, IMO, was to be a cinematic experience and that is exactly what they delivered. Had they added free roam, excessive side-questing the pacing of the whole story would be thrown out of whack.

I think a lot of people get wrapped up in the whole tit-for-tat argument of "well this game had this and that one doesnt" without really thinking about how it would affect the game as a whole.

So far, i havent seen anyone list a similar game that was better at what The Last of Us did... hell, i would have been happy with "Uncharted w/ Zombies" but i got a whole heckuva lot more...

I found the graphics and artwork/atmosphere to be excellent. If graphics was so important than games such as Hotline Miami, other retro games, and games like The Last Of Us would not be highly successful.

My problem is, I have higher "standards" so to speak when it comes to atmosphere and level design, at least when it comes to games that are supposed to be atmospheric. As far as graphics go, The Last of Us is one of the best looking console games so that is one of its selling points. Most console gamers are dazzled by its graphics. lachen.gif

Yeah if anyone thought I was saying that The Last of Us should have been S.T.A.L.K.E.R., then they should re-read. Though I am disappointed in the gameplay of Last of Us slightly; I'm not a fan of dumbed down games, it could have done a better job as a story-driven game and especially as a survival game.

It's not very intense, gameplay is too simple for me. One of the best thing about survival games is the intensity; having to carefully plan every move you make, making every step forward count. This is totally absent from The Last of Us. I also don't like how Ellie is practically invisible to enemy AI when they aren't alerted.

I would have loved a more "hardcore" healing and crippling system, along the lines of Fallout, and a bleeding system like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I wouldn't ask for food/drink/sleep requirements out of a linear game of course, that has no place here.

Combined with a gas mask filter system like Metro, less invisible walls (linear is one thing, but if it looks like you can go someplace, you should be able to go there), more alternate paths for sneaking (big letdown, since the game does somewhat emphasize stealth), and much greater attention to detail in the level design like Fallout 3 or Metro, and I would have been a bigger fan of this game.

Enemy design leaves a bit to be desired too. Fighting them is very straightforward, and there is just poor variety. Plus I'm sure we all feel that we've seen the likes of them before. They just weren't very creative.

There aren't too many games like The Last of Us; cinematic post-apocalyptic games. The only remotely similar games I've played are the Metro games, and even then they are quite different. But they do offer more intense survival mechanics, making me actually feel desperate at times, as well as more exploration and alternate stealth paths while remaining overall linear. Plus the attention to detail is just much better, both in terms of level design like I said earlier, and there's a lot more ambient dialogue.

All of these things would have fit very well into The Last of Us, but I'm aware that most of its fanbase would be against more brutal and complex gameplay, and even if the level design/atmosphere was improved in the ways I mentioned, it would go unnoticed.

I'm sure people would appreciate improved level design. My only complaint would be an option to sneak past guards without having to kill them. Yes this is possible in most/some areas, but there are sections where you have to kill to progress. I think what would have been more interesting is if they implemented unique path ways for the stealthy type to make use of, a la Deus Ex, Dishonored, even Metro LL or heck even Splinter Cell. I was kinda expecting a more subdued approach to stealth, but what I found was an approach to stealth that kinda wanted me to supplement it with killing all the guards.
