90 dollar mobo + ram upgrade worth it?

Hello, I hope I can get a fast answer on this as I have to buy these parts soonish or they will go off sale.

My current rig is:
MOBO: Asrock A780LM-S (am3 mobo, not am3+, no heatsinks on the VRMS, 95w proc TDP limit.)
CPU: Athlon 2 x3 (kinda old but has served me well. Not entirely dissatisfied with its performance right now but an upgrade would be nice)
GPU: 6870 Twin Frozr 2 (good but hitting vram limit ALOT in skyrim, shoulda went with 2gb...)
CASE: Haf 912
PSU: Antec EA500D
HDDS: 1tb samsung F3 (before it got bought out by whatever company) 320gb IDE + 120gb IDE (backup storage)
RAM: 4gb DDR2 800mhz (For the love of god if you are going to make the argument that I need to upgrade to get faster ram, educate yourself. In gaming situations there is literally 0.8fps difference at most between 1333mhz and 2100mhz. I realize this is DDR3 vs ddr3 and I have DDR2 vs DDR3 but still its not a concern.)

This is my current dilemma, I don't have a job so any money I get is far and few between. I would like to spend it on upgrading my rig, this brings me to my second issue. I don't want to try OCing on my current board because of the 95w TDP and the VRM heatsink issue previously laid out, that said I doubt overclocking a athlon 2 x3 to say 3.6ghz would be much and an increase at all. Thinking maybe a couple FPS realistically.

Kinda want to hear your thoughts. This would allow me to add another 4gb stick very easily and bring me up to the 8gb sweet spot. Also would allow me to hopefully pick up some parts by the time steam roller is out. I realize there are a couple cheaper 760 boards but I don't want those as my current one is a 760G.

ONTO THE IMPORTANT PART: heres my part selection

you might be able to unlock that rana with that mobo. for tim i recommend this . . .

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/SKUSearch.asp?scriteria=AA77214&pagetitle=Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound - 4gram

i use it for the cpu and gpu with great results.

for the ram . . . this was on sale yesterday for $10 . . .

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7622493&tab=7&SRCCODE=WEBLET03ORDER&cm_mmc=Email-_-WebletMain-_-WEBLET03ORDER-_-Deals&utm_source=EML&utm_medium=main&utm_campaign=WEBLET03ORDER

not sure if it is compatible with that board, though. check the qvl (list of rams found in the manud=facturer's site). make sure you get 2 X 2GB or 2 X 4GB for dual channel mode.

edit: btw, your links do not work. and - YES, it is worth it.

Sorry, fixed the links.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you think it would be worth the upgrade? I would probably pick up either a fx4300/6300 or something in the steam roller line up.

Not sure what warranted the RAM argument..
What's your current utilization, anyway?

I like the plan but I would also advise to keep on eye on the various FS forums. A few months ago I picked up a PH II 965 BE for $50 bucks shipped and regularly see decent mobos for the 45-60 buck range so might be able to find some decent combo's for about 100 bucks shipped. But yeah your plan sounds solid. thumb.gif

BIOSTAR A960D+ AM3+ AMD 760G mATX, 125W $66 @ newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138373

with a free stick of DDR3 - Crucial Ballistix Sport LP 8GB (1x 8GB) DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 @1.35v

AMD Phenom II X4 965BE, 3.4GHz, 125W, OEM (no heatsink) $67.99 AC + $2.35 shipping
http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=HDZ965GM

Promo code HONOR15, ends 05/27/2013

BIOSTAR A960D+ doesn't seem like an overclocker friendly board but it does support
125W CPUs. x4 965BE would work with it and you could get a second 4GB stick later on.

If I were you, I would moderately OC the CPU to a 3.6ghz....

I wouldn't get a new mobo until you plan on CPU+Mobo+RAM at once.
