Newbie 7950 Bios Help

Thread Starter
Hi guys. I finally gave up on my little endeavor and decided to join this forum for further help. I recently purchased an used Sapphire 7950 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202026) from a local seller and I started having problems right away after installation. Problems range from cut-off/stuttering audio via HDMI source to unstable performance during benchmarking/gameplay and occasionally the computer hangs for like 30-60 seconds before resuming itself.

This card has a dual bios switch but uses the "push button" configuration instead of the usual 1<->2 switch. I delved deeper into the card and realized something was totally off. I'm not sure if the previous owner flashed the bios but on both bios versions my clock and memory are identical (925 clock/1250memory). The only difference is the VDDC; one is set at 1.250 and the other is 1.678 (iirc - but somewhere around that).

I've tried searching for the correct bios for this card but haven't had any success. Right now at this point, I just want to simply re-flash it back to the correct factory bios for both profiles and start the benchmark again. Also, does anyone know which bios is primary and which one is secondary? Since I bought this used it didn't come with the manual and I have no idea which switch corresponds to which profile (master/secondary). Since my card is the push button type, I have no clue if 'button-down' or button-up' is primary or secondary. Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks for your time. thumb.gif

You can try here for your correct bios http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/
and here for flashing utilities http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/Utilities/BIOS_Flashing/ATI/

That was part of my initial endeavor. I already tried searching on TPU for the correct bios but I guess my card is too new and no bios information has been listed on it as of yet. When I tried searching for one of the version I currently have on my card, it shows up as a Gigabyte bios which further re-enforces my belief that the previous owner definitely did flash the bios to something else.

Does anyone have the same card as me who won't mind sending me both bios profiles (normal & boost)?

I have 3 Sapphire Boost cards and the bios is the same on both positions. Maybe try posting in here http://www.overclock.net/t/1365110/anyone-use-sapphire-model-100352-3l-radeon-7950/0_30

I was led to believe on dual bios cards, you have a normal/lower clock (eg: 850/1250) and a boost clock (eg: 950/1250). Isn't that the whole point of a dual bios card with boost?
I can assure you that both are exactly the same on my cards. I have a older 7950 that does have 2 different bios's. But on that card the only difference is being able to select display outputs. I have one 7970 that does have different clocks and voltages on the bios's.

I think the card you have has the same thing on both bios 1 and 2 as its a newer card.

What about the VDDC? Can you confirm that the default is at 1.678 and boost profile is at 1.250?

Eitherway.. for the sake of self assurance, I'd still like to reflash the card with a Sapphire bios. I have no clue why the previous owner used a Gigabyte 7950 bios.

P.S - Just got a response from Sapphire Support, they confirmed that my card is suppose to have 850/1250 default and 925/1250 boost clock. I'm getting more confused now.

It'd really help if you filled in your sig rig.

However I have 2 x Sapphire 7950 Boost Dual-X 3L, just like you. They are both just like this. The non-lit up 'default' profile is 925mhz@1.25v, the lit-up profoile is same but at 1.168v. It's just how the card is, it doesn't make any sense, but working as intended thumb.gif

HOWEVER - I have a very strong suspicion that you can't change the voltage on these cards.

So what I figured, is that only with the lit-up profile, using ONLY modded trixx 4.4 (not 4.6, not unofficial msi, not 4.4, etc), can you 'change' the voltage, as in, it'll report being changed in hwinfo, gpu-z, etc. But I have a very strong suspicion you aren't actually changing the voltage. Ie I can do 1083mhz@ stock 1.169v. But 1118mhz@1.25v... not stable. 1.153mhz crashes the same in either 1.3v or 1.169v. I'm pretty sure the voltage doesn't change at all..

I dont know, I'm still working on it. I think temps rise still, but like not a single aoita of overclock with massive overvoltage...
