[Various] Xbox One Reveal - Page 114

The thing about phones is that they add mobility to gaming/websurfing. Smartphones do things that a desktop/laptop can't. A console (for the most part) sits at home in one spot. It has to compete with everything else that occupies the same space and does the same thing. I have DVR; I have a blue ray player; I have a computer. They all do the same jobs and likely better than the Xbox can. The problem that I see is that it doesn't add any level of organization or convenience. Hence why the xbox should have focused on gaming because that's what it can do that the other devices can't. thumb.gif

I know there are a myriad of other features besides that you are paying for though. Just saying that not exactly a 1 to 1 comparison.

Looks cool just not for me personally.
and that OK but when you look at it it has been evolving in to a media center over the last 7 or more years. And for some reason ever one think that these new features will take away from it main one playing games and it wont that there beard and butter you can bet good money that it will play games just as well as the PS4. It just adds to what the system can do giving add worth to those that see value in it its no different then buying a PC I may need it just to do work and nothing more but the fact it can play games or watch movie and use the net are just bonuses on top of what I need it for not a hinder-ens to what it does.

Well, even if the TV/Entertainment stuff totally bombs, they can do a retooling of the software to refocus it as a gaming-centric device. The hardware is solid and very adaptable.

X1 is going to totally dominate with all these features us gamers are complaining about. My dad told me today that he read about the new Xbox on some mainstream news site and now plans on buying one. That's crazy because he has never actually bought a single gaming system.

E3 is where people like us will get the news we've been waiting for. thumb.gif

Things will always evolve and change, no matter how much crying this community does. Furthermore, MS will be successful, because we are the niche and millions of people will buy this so called "xbone" regardless how much "core gamers" whine and cry about it on forums such as these.

You make good points. Im really expecting them to have a HUGE E3 though. They have to win the gamers back. It was the perception that they shunned gamers. Perception isnt reality but we shall she. Not too far away!

Indeed, and it seems that MS is pissing off their core market and risking a lot of revenue in favor of trying to get into new markets. (Probably unsuccessfully)
What does that remind you of? Here's a hint: Start Menu.

What is the purpose of getting these features in and advertising them so hard? The X360 and PS3 already had half of them, but they weren't advertised much because..well, being a games console they tend to mainly be used for gaming; most people I know who have a PS3 and/or Xbox 360 mainly use them for games (I also include people who are definitely not IT Techs or even really much above casual gamers in that, by the way) and don't want to use those features...Also, considering that MS will make a loss on each console sold at first why would they even want these people (Who would most likely buy 1-2 games at most in the entire life-time of the console) to buy their console? It worked for Nintendo because they made profits on every Wii (And no doubt Wii U) sold from day one. Considering you need a Kinect 2 and the like I doubt MS is going to be able to make a profit on this without launching it at PS3 launch level prices which will make it fail in its own way.

I've also said this before, as well: Why didn't MS "leak" the new controller around now to generate hype, launch the console at E3 and announce games at launch, then show the TV stuff off later? You know what was announced at E3 2005? The PS3, the "revolution" and the Xbox 360 with games. It's clear MS is concentrating on breaking new markets with this but once again hasn't realized they can do that without alienating their core audience or features that only a few people really need or want.

It's only thanks to countless doubts/concerns people are throwing at MS employees in forms of Twitter feeds, emails, articles, etc....the responses are fragmented all over the freaking internet in bits and pieces. Is that how MS wanted the cold hard facts to spread?
Why wasn't the stuff about lack of backwards compatibility, inbuilt DRM, mandatory Kinect, mandatory internet connection every 24 hours, etc (you know stuff about the console) included in the console reveal??

Answer that.

Microsoft dun' goofed.

Exactly, no matter how you spin it MS stuffed this announcement up heaps, there's a tonne of confusion and no-one is quite sure what they're trying to do.

No, but do all the additional features on my HTC One make the phone calling worse at all? Nope, and a smartphone really isn't just a phone anymore..hence the smartphone, phablet, etc labels. At the very least, the 3 OS thing is going to eat up more RAM than the PS4s system software unless MS does some serious optimization to the Windows kernel.

Perhaps you're not aware but Sony already tried the media hub thing about 9 years ago with the Playstation X:

1705840-psx_5100.jpg

It sold horribly in Japan and was never exported as a result (except on eBay and places like that), mainly due to it being ~$600 - ~$750, though also because PS3 rumors were coming around the same time and people though it was best to wait for the PS3. Personally I kinda like it, it's basically a PS2 + DVD burner + DVR (160GB or 250GB), but it was still way too expensive.

Please.

What they've announced hardly affects their ability to support games and as Anand already stated as much in his well informed column.
Quote:
It’s nearly impossible for the Xbox One not to be a substantial upgrade over the Xbox 360. The fact that Microsoft could ship a single integrated SoC instead of a multi-chip CPU+GPU solution this generation is telling enough. You don’t need to integrate anywhere near the fastest CPUs and GPUs to outperform the Xbox 360, something closer to the middle of the road works just fine.

Microsoft won’t have any issues delivering many times the performance of the Xbox 360. The Xbox One features far more compute power and memory bandwidth than the Xbox 360. Going to 8GB of RAM is also a welcome upgrade, especially since it’s identical to what Sony will ship on the PlayStation 4. As AMD is supplying relatively similar x86 CPU and GCN GPU IP to both consoles, porting between them (and porting to PCs) should be far easier than ever before. The theoretical performance comparison between the two next-gen consoles is where things get a bit sticky.

Sony gave the PS4 50% more raw shader performance, plain and simple (768 SPs @ 800MHz vs. 1152 SPs & 800MHz). Unlike last generation, you don't need to be some sort of Jedi to extract the PS4's potential here. The Xbox One and PS4 architectures are quite similar, Sony just has more hardware under the hood. We’ll have to wait and see how this hardware delta gets exposed in games over time, but the gap is definitely there. The funny thing about game consoles is that it’s usually the lowest common denominator that determines the bulk of the experience across all platforms.

Do yourself a favor. If you like console gaming, get both systems. Don't be a fanboi of any one camp. They all have their pros and cons.
