It's not a laptop (The Xbox is hardly portable, why compare a Laptop to that?) but this build isn't too expensive:

That Phenom II is good enough to game, and honestly...Throw a Radeon HD10k series card (They'll change the name obviously, but you get what I mean) in down the track and you'll be gaming at or above console settings for the entire life-time of the PC.
As for price...In between Steam Sales allowing you to get games for cheap (ie. I got the entire 3D GTA franchise for $15 and every AC game bar ACIII for $30, I saved $200+ alone from those two.) additional controllers, XBL Gold, PSN+, etc you end up paying just as much for a console as you do PC mostly, especially if that console dies and you need to pay to send it back/to buy a new one.

N64 topped PS1, PS2 topped Xbox, 360 topped the PS3... Being the most powerful system kind of has a bad track record.

Traditionally because of other reasons like price and the games being hard to code for, this gen both of the main consoles use virtually the same CPU and similar GPUs and while the PS4 has more hardware, etc to pay for the XBOne has a Kinect 2 to bundle with each console last I checked. All in all, every generation of consoles has gotten more balanced than the last...Also, the PS3 has outsold the 360. (See the end of that: "Sony's PS3 managed to surpass the number of Xbox 360s shipped worldwide (about 77 million vs. 76 million), despite the PS3 launching a year later.")

Look why, though:
PS1: It had, by far, the best advertising and games overall, N64 had Goldeneye, Conkers Bad Fur Day, SSB, and a handful of other good games but it really didn't compare...Mostly kids got the N64.
PS2: Everyone knew the PS1, and most loved it, it had the best games on it (GTA 6 month exclusive, for example) and got a lot of kids playing too.
360: Launched earlier against lackluster competition (Wii which wasn't good at first for gamers and the PS3 which was priced too high, had too little games, etc) while also being much easier to code for.

In this generation, the PS4 is virtually an slightly upgraded Xbox One, whereas in the previous generations the more powerful consoles used weird architectures (eg. N64s multi-chip weird thing and expansion pak, PS3 and Cell) that were hard to code for or had some other bad negatives (eg. Price, design of the controllers.) that held it back.
Lets compare to this generation:

Cost: Okay, the PS4s hardware will cost more...That APU will be pretty big and hard to make, but you have to keep in mind what else is included...Xbox? You have XBL Gold to pay for, it comes with a Kinect 2, etc and Sony won't want to make the same mistake they did with the PS3. All in all I can see the prices being close to equal.
Coding Difficulty: Both use 8 core x86 chips, most likely Jaguar based ones...From what we've heard, both may use similar GPUs (With the One's being weaker overall) too. I can't see either being easier to code for, especially since the PS4 allows you to use Windows and Visual Studio.
Controller Design: Both have highly honed controller designs that work well at this point...The PS controller isn't the best for big hands but it's not bad.

Chances are the 360 would be at ~$600 at least, if you had one die and not replaced like mine was...Plus the cost of extra controllers, AA batteries/the recharge pack, etc
Especially if you had an SDTV...That is an upgrade cost and much more expensive generally than a new 1080p screen.

First off.

It's going to be so much fun watching their grumpy faces when they start feeling the backlash in real dollars (if the fee makes it to release). I'm hoping they're dumb enough to go ahead with it, I really am.

Unless Sony does something similar, which would be incredibly silly.

They're different economies. Sure, games sell at full price on steam, but they fly off the shelves like bacon at a barbecue when they're under $10. And it's amazing how often that happens to some very good games.

Not to mention that my lifetimes worth of super frugal AAA games on Steam is perpetual. When I upgrade I can still play them all. Valve, at least for the moment, is intent on making people feel very secure about their account. The long term question is, can Valve stay this way forever?

On the other hand, your Xbox 1 games will die with that console, they are a short term investment.

Well Microsoft lost a customer here, I have been a loyal fan of the xbox consoles but I can't get behind this new console. The need to be online once every 24 hours kills it for me, it means no longer will I be able to bring a system to my families house who don't have internet. To add insult to injury you will no longer be able to let your friends try out the game if you get it. PS4 will be my choice this time around, with the money I save from not paying for xbox live for 4 years I will be able to buy the xbox when it is super cheap.

So you're saying PC is better at doing what your local cable vendor does? Uh...No, and the Xbox One should be better then your local cable vendors.

Console gamers will accept the very same "fate". You may not, but they will. I assure you. Console gaming will go on with or without all the "pissed off" people in this thread. Remember, we're the niche.

As I said before, this was inevitable. consoles are only going where pc's and Steam have been for a while. I'll say it again. Physical media is dead. This is it's last hurrah, if you can call it that.

Shock, Anger, grief, acceptance......you see where I'm going don't you? The market WILL adjust. Believe it.

It's obvious they're trying to appeal to a wider audience but i think most gamers want a console without all that tacked on. It's kind of like getting a new laptop with bloatware but without the ability to remove it IMO. For TV they're still streaming are they not? The used video game thing is outrageous IMO.

That was like a huge part of childhood. Head over to friends house with just a game and extra controller in your hand or vice versa.

That's the part that always gets me, too.
I suppose they got the whole "play with friends online" deal.
Sadly, kids need more reasons to get outside once in a while, not less.

X1 lost my desire less than half way through those ugly details.
And then I see the thing... Oh my geez.
Why does that look like something from the '80s to me...?

I, for one, will not be controlled by the "if you wanna play this exclusive..." crap.
I can live without the few of the exclusives I could have interest in,
that's if they even manage to do those series some justice.
Most exclusive are just worn-out and/or recycled garbage in my eyes.

I also miss when backwards-compatibility was a selling point.
I was so frickin excited when I first saw the MGS on PS1 vs. PS2 pictures in a PSM.
It was great having your new console purchase enhance your current library.
Now they'd rather just touch those games up, and RE-SELL THEM to you.
Moar munnies for them, less for you.

The way the gaming industry has gone these day always makes me think of that Twix commercial;
"Two for me; None for you."
If these guys had a Twix, that's how they'd handle it.
