Like soo many others, I need help figuring out a 1155 mATX build

post #1 of 14
Thread Starter
So about 3 days ago I went down to the States and got an i7 3770k from microcenter for 230+ tax (I wanted a xeon E3 1275v2 but 3770k does more). The problem is now I dont know which motherboard to get for a microATX build, just as I dont know which components to use for the rest of the build. I took a guess as to which parts would work well and so far ive chosen:

ASRock Z77 Fatal1ty Professional-M
Patriot Viper 3 DDR3-1866
(unknown radeon/geforce graphics card)
Auzentech X-fi Bravura/HT|OMEGA eClaro soundcard
Swiftech H220

Seasonic X-760
Fractal Design Arc Mini/Define Mini/NZXT Vulcan/InWin BR-665
Cougar Turbine Case Fans
Aerocool Shark Case Fans
NZXT Sentry Mesh Fan Controller

Please tell me what you think and how i could make this better. PS: NO Maximus V Gene plz

Also what happened to ECS' Z77H2 A5X Deluxe?

Don't get that mobo. My vote is for ASUS Maximus V Gene, ASUS P8Z77-M Pro , or Gigabyte Sniper 3 M3 mATX. thumb.gif

What are your thoughts about a mini itx build? You could then get an external dac/amp for your sound. thumb.gif

How about the Gigabyte GA-Z77MX-D3H?  Solid board, has everything you need, and well priced.

Asus MVG is alright, Maximus V Gene not really loving mine as my CPU hit a wall during my OC attempts. Not the Mobo's fault but there are features from other boards I wished the MVG had,
If I can do it again I'd look into MSI M-Power but that's just me.

I think ASUS Maximus V Gene is a bit overrated for the price of $200. Sin has it listed as 4 phase with doublers , though it does have Fan Xpert 2 ,debug LED + v-check points. If you have extra cash to blow, it's good. There's a load of POST issues on Z77 Asus boards on Newegg and Amazon though.

I'd save the $60 and go for a P8Z77-M Pro (Fan Xpert+) with a 8 pin power plug (in case you ever draw that much power....). It seems to do as well as ATX boards, pushing 4.7GHz http://lanoc.org/review/motherboards/5807-asus-z77-roundup?start=16
--> a bunch of people on Newegg say it has issues with their PSUs

GA-Z77MX-D3H (Vortex has it as 4+2 http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/gigabyte_z77mx_d3h_review,4.html and topped out around 4.5GHz) is another cheaper option. with a 4 pin power plug
* http://extremespec.net/gigabyte-ga-z77mx-d3h-motherboard-review-overclocking-and-testing/2/ = it's 4 phase
* Anandtech got it to 4.7 http://www.anandtech.com/show/5850/gigabyte-gaz77mxd3h-review-z77-and-microatx/4

G1.Sniper M3 seems to be overpriced at $170 like the Maximus V Gene.

The AsRock Z77 Fatality Professional M has analog VRM as far as I know, so you might have some inaccurate Vcore readings among other things (although I saw someone get 6GHz on it)

edit: If I'm not mistaken the ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/Gen3 (z68) is a stronger board than the Z77 version

Yes, it does crossfire or SLI. PCI 3.0 x16, or x8 x8. Double Slot Cards will fit with a soundcard in the middle.
Quote:
Typically with a microATX board these are arranged in an x8/x1/x8/x4 arrangement, but on the G1.Sniper M3 these are x8/x1/x4/x8.

It's in hungarian, but you can still see what i mean.

Another small form factor board i would recommend, but it's m-itx, so no crossfire/sli is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131840 As mentioned before, you would need to get a usb dac as apposed to a soundcard. thumb.gif

I did 660ti sli on my gigabyte sniper m3, the catch is you need a mATX case with 5 slots, and 4 seems to be the standard.
