Hopefully when Kaveri is introduced, SODIMM 2133 MHz and standard 2400 MHz RAM won't be absurdly expensive.

Or that a manufacturer uses at least 6 GB GDDR5 with an A10 laptop.

There's nothing shady about it and it is simply how supply & demand works. Maybe it would help to read a little bit before crying your head off like a baby about how evil companies are and how they're ruining your life and they should be fined for it. I'm really getting sick of hearing this sort of nonsense everywhere on this forum.

Good business model by "the big guys" though dont you think? Only the largest companies could survive the insane price war they were having, hence why so many companies got out of ram as there was little to no profits. Now with only a handful of players, they can all decide to "divert" their attention to another market (yeah... ok...) and suddenly ram prices shoot up. You think laptop/mobile ram won't follow? Sure will. In a year, ALL ram prices will have inflated quite a bit. Good thing theres not a bunch of players in the game that can still offer cheap ram right? They got wiped out in the "competitiveness".

I know it sounds tin foil hat, but its far from insane when you look at what really takes place in the business world. It's actually something that happens quite a bit. Ever wonder why Walmart stores, that buys stuff in massive bulk, can only match or shave about $0.02 off a product you can get at an independent store as well? They sure as heck aren't paying the same cost for those items. I used to be able to buy stuff at dozens and dozens of stores in my city, now its almost all big box stores and a few small stores, usually selling odd and unusual things you can't get a big box stores, just to make it. It's the classic business model. Underprice and wipe out the competition, then raise prices and profit, cause there's no alternative.

Paid $55 or so for my 8GB 2133 CL9 that I run at 1733 CL7 and now I'd have a hard time getting the 4GB kit for that price shipped. I'm sorry, they can make every excuse in the world, but its simple business practices, not a change in the market.

Wondering if I should buy the RAM now for the build I'm planning in a month or two, in case they keep going up.

As you'd expect, prices are like this in the UK too. They've doubled since the start of the year.

(well I started this thread off feeling pretty neutral but I'm a sucker for the corporatocracy bashing so...)

Yea it's no surprise they'd weed out the competition when the new standard is on the way in. Maybe give someone a chance to bogart a manufacturing license or something along those lines...

On the other hand, it could possibly give an incentive for the smaller operations to get back in the game if RAM becomes profitable again.

But on the whole I just can't be moved from the position that this is just the kind of thing you see when a new tech cycle comes around. I mean it is one of the few standards not being updated and obsoleted at insanely high rates. Yet.

From the start there were only a handful of RAM manufacturers, most of the OEMs you see selling branded RAM buy the parts from manufacturers, assemble them, and sell them. They're not even relevant to what the article is talking about. The article is talking about those handfuls of DRAM chip and PCB manufacturers and how they've repurposed their manufacturing power to produce parts for ultramobile devices (smartphones and tablets) and embedded systems. Yea, the prices will probably rise because the manufacturers are going to switch production to produce more desktop/laptop RAM as the article stated. Not that you would know much less even notice, since only OEMs would know the actual prices of RAM for smartphones and tablets; there is no such thing as DIY smartphone parts. It's bad enough you have paranoid delusions, you're uneducated and ignorant too.

So it's the people buying cellphones that are being exploited then?

Well the Galaxy S4 is estimated to cost under $250 to manufacture but will sell for $600 to $700 unsubsidized, so take it as you will. I opine that if a consumer has alternative options but still chooses to pay the price for a good, they're simply getting what they paid for - i.e. they're not being exploited.
