Its been about 5 years since Ive put together a rig and ive got some questions.

So I am going to order a new computer this week and ive been out of touch with the industry for about 5 years now. As you may know a lot has changed and parts have advanced quickly. So anyways im looking for some advice from you kind people here at Overclock. When I decided to build a new rig I thought an $800 should be plenty for a great computer to last me for quite a few years. After many hours over the past few days, not one of my possible builds were under $900. With every part its like for just a few more dollars you can have a much better part, but where can you draw the line. Also If i am spending 800, whats the extra 100 to get the 7950 instead of the 7850. I dont have all the money in the world but if the extra money for a part is justified, so be it. Im relying on Newegg, but also have a Microcenter not to far away in Baltimore. Here is what I have put together, let me know what you think.

From NewEgg
COOLER MASTER HAF XB
Now i am kinda set on this case, I like the ability to be so open and easy to move.

CORSAIR CX600M 600W Modular

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866

XIGMATEK LOKI SD963

SanDisk SDSSDP-128G

XFX Double D FX-795A-TDFC Radeon HD 7950 3GB

From Microcenter
Toshiba 2TB 7,200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s Desktop 3.5" In

AMD FX 8350 4GHz AM3+ Black Edition

Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 Socket AM3+ 990FX ATX AMD
Microcenter has the 8350 and the GA-990FX bundled for 280/ 270 AMR

Most of these products currently have instant savings or rebates, but with memorial day right around the corner should I just buy it up now or wait to see what these sales could bring?

Thanks for the input and help!

Hi and welcome back! I'll do my best to give you a hand!

Case: That is YOUR choice. If you like this case, buy it. I think it's a good buy! lol

PSU: I've heard/read mixed reviews on the corsair CX brand. You have quality, high performance parts running a low end Corsair unit. Spending a little more on what powers your machine will save you in the long run.

Ram: Gskill ripjaws are good. Everybody has em!

CPU Cooler: Not sure on this model. Looks like a cheaper version of a Cooler Master Hyper 212 evo. I recommend the evo but this should be enough

SSD: It's a good unit. PCB is smaller then most, but it should do the trick. I was thinking about using it as a secondary for programs. Reviews are positive on this one.

GPU: Good choice! I have a 7870 XT which is just a stripped down version of 7950 and I've never had any issue. I recommend going with Sapphire for this. XFX is having some quality control issues as of late.

HDD: An HDD is an HDD. Nuff said lol

CPU: Another good choice! 8 logical cores, good cache, more then enough for anything you throw at it without breaking the bank.

Motherboard: Gigabyte is a good brand and this 990FX is more then enough now and will handle any upgrades in the future.

Even if you've been out for 5 years, you still make some solid choices! Old habits die hard eh? lol

What a great response, thank you my good sir!

Im really focused on my gpu as of now. Is the 7950 w/ 3g ram worth the extra 80-120 bucks over the 7870?

Hi.
1.Only comment on the 1st post is the PSU. Check this out.
Unless you plan on crossfire, a 650W PSU will be ok. And if you plan on OC'ing, that changes things in power consumption.

2. The GPU recommendation thingy. At what res are you going to game at?

Solid build, Btw. thumb.gif

Pretty good build but I'd change the RAM to this, same price way faster.

RAM($70) - Team Xtreem LV 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313323

I also hear the 7870XT(7930 would be a more suiting name) is really good aswell(better then the standard 7870, and almost as good as a 7950).

Although at $260, you might as well commit the last $30 and get the 7950.

Thank you for the response!

This is exactly what im talking about, last time I was think about computer parts Corsair was the bees knees when it came to PSU. What would you suggest?

Right now, sadly enough, im only at 16x900 but going to be upgrading to 1080p within the next few months.

Everyone can agree that the extra ~$40-50 is completely worth it for the 7950 w/ 3gb right?

This is a good PSU on promotion, modular also.

PSU($72 with promo code RW20PPSU) - Rosewill CAPSTONE Series CAPSTONE-550-M
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182262

I'd say it's worth getting the 7950 for the bit of extra money.

I would agree that the 7950 would be a great performer and can be had for decent costs. heres a suggestion on a power supply that is great and not too expensive
