Thinking my PSU is hampering OC ability.

What was stable last January (we have central air conditioning and good heating at my house, so ambient temperatures should be the same, or maybe 1 or 2 degrees higher) is no longer IBT stable. The settings are currently at the unstable settings of 4.5 GHz at 1.3875 V. I haven't ran IBT until today, tried to run five passes, and it restarted. Last January, it was stable. I had replaced the CPU (FX-8150 to FX-8350) and the MB (GA-970A-UD3 to GA-990FXA-UD7) last December, and still had the problem, but the problem occurred at higher VCore levels, 1.4125 V and up. Now the problem is gonna force me to stock clocks. Should I replace my PSU? Although I've already RMA'ed my PSU once for a loose ATX12V connector, I don't feel like RMAing the PSU again knowing it still works (somewhat), and plus there are much better power supplies out there, which I'd rather buy. I guess, the main thing I want to know is this, is my power supply dying?

If I were to get a PSU, it'd be the Corsair AX760i. Yes, it's a little big for my rig, but then again, I want the tight voltage regulation and low ripple, along with high efficiency. I don't know any other power supply that gives me 80 Plus Platinum efficiency along with real tight voltage regulation and real low ripple.

Corsair AX760i is not the best choice you got other just as good or better options

What PSU do you have now?

It's in my sig, but I'll repeat it anyway. Antec HCG-750. Reason I want to replace it is I think it's the reason for the instability of my overclocking.

If you only has a single video card you dont need anywhere near 750 watts unless you plan on adding a second video card

Like I said, I'm taking voltage regulation and ripple into account. My research has shown the AX760i has very tight 12V regulation (0.25%) and very low ripple (20 mV). If I can find another 80 Plus Platinum unit with those stats that's more around 550 W, i'm all ears for it. But I haven't been able to find one.

Fractal Design Newton R3 600 watts is what comes to mind

Only problems is its way overpriced in the US

Here in Denmark its priced between the Corsair HX and the old AX making it a great deal

What I saw from the lone review of the Fractal Design Newton R3 600W was that it had great 12V voltage regulation, comparable to the AX760i, but it had higher ripple results, around 45 mV at full load.

Alright here is reason not to buy the AX760i

Voltage and ripple will not have such a major effect on an overclock, unless you have a crappy vrm on your board or the psu is way out of spec. If you still want to upgrade for slightly better performance, the r3 600w is plenty good. The atx spec for ripple is 120mv, 45mv will not cause any issue with your board. Also great is the Kingwin absolute platinum 550w, it's ripple is 36mv max according to techpowerup.

Could voltage regulation and ripple make the difference between say... a 24 multiplier, and a 24.5 multiplier? If it does, I know the route I'm going. And what about long-term viability of those power supplies? I can probably answer it myself, which is they're good long-term... I know warranties aren't the way to determine quality though.

I also read here that buying a PSU with lower ripple is a hedge against capacitor degradation. http://www.overclock.net/t/719397/on-ripple-and-its-effects-on-overclocking/0_100

It comes down to... am I willing to shell out $170 for the AX760i for it's excellent performance, or do I go cheaper for a little less performance. I won't be adding another video card to this system, I feel a 7970 will last me a long time. It's already been 16 months and I haven't found a game yet where I have to turn down the settings.

Oh, the software that comes with the AX760i? I won't be using it, so it doesn't matter to me whether it's buggy or not.
