I saw a pretty sweet homemade chilled fan ages ago.

Basically coiled some copper tubing around a fan and pumped ice water from a cooler with tubing holes cut into it with an aquarium pump. It actually blew enough cold air to lower the room temperature, but they had to keep refilling the ice so only ran it at night to help sleep.

TEC's wont work. By nature they release more heat then they can chill, so you will literally be having a net heating of your room.

I know that they release more heat. The heat from the hot side gets exhausted outside via W/C radiator. Evap coolers aren't quite my style, but thanks for the suggestion smile.gif

Is there some other relatively simple configuration you would recommend?

So if you're planning on using those 65watt DT max TECs at 12v the max power consumption it can obtain is about 75watts. Mind you that 75watts electricity usage was when I plugged in the worst possible scenario to see the absolute max power draw it could obtain.

You should be fine using molex plugs.

Ok, so I've ordered parts. I won't get a chance to build it for a few weeks, but when I do/if I feel like it, i'll post results/pictures/a post of devastating shame and failure depending on how it goes.

I ended up going with the dual loop. The cold side is going through a 120mm rad and the hot side is going through a 240mm rad (I may add a second 240 to the hot side if the water temps are too high. I'm not sure what PSU I'll get but probably something cheap from microcenter that I can return when it frys (hah kind of a pun). Enclosure will probably be wood since I can't work metal to save my life.

Thanks for joining in guys! I can't wait to see if this thing works.

So if you're not sure about what liquid to use for the cool loop you might consider Mayhems XT-1 cooling fluid. A 50% ratio would assure you would never have a possibility of ice buildup. Mayhems XT-1 is a glycol based coolant specifically designed for sub ambient PC cooling, so you likely wont run into any problems.

I was thinking about using washer fluid. I have a few gallons of that in my garage and I think it's good to -30 or something. I guess I'll look into it's thermal conductivity when I get home after the school year ends.

With those TECs you'll reach -30 cold TEC side easily. You'll want a pretty decent gap from loop's liquid freezing temp to lowest possible loop temp. Otherwise, there can be slow ice buildup on the coldblock which will cause flowrate issues, and eventually burn out your TECs and your pump.

What would you suggest as fluid that doesn't freeze at -30? Pure alcohol? Oil? Antifreeze?

Well with constant flowing coolant and warm up form the ambient air flowing over the cold side rad the coolant should never get anywhere near that cold (if it does you desperately need a better fan, more radiator space).

Oil is a no go as it gets to thick when cold. Alcohol would work but is expensive, evaporates quickly and has poor thermal conductivity. I would use antifreeze and distilled water. You probably wont need it to be more then -10C proof as like I said the coolant should not get that cold as you want the cooling out in the room not "stuck" in the loop.
