There's another list, with more Gs used. The rules of acronym usage are pretty clear, being the creator of something doesn't mean you get to re-write the rules of English.

Unfortunately for you, when GIF was created. It was not an English word, it was his word, a universal internet word made for every language and person who uses the internet. Does not need to abide by the rules of English.

From now on I'm pronouncing it GTF

Big fat "who cares" to what the creator thinks/wants/pronounces.

Its not his word though, its an acronym for 3 english words.

What point is there in arguing, over and over, about the correct usage for an acronym?

Here is the answer:

1) According to the acroynm G.I.F. which stand for "Graphics...", it uses a hard G. So saying "Giff" is correct.

2) According to GIF as not an acroynm (how many times do you say "Graphics..." or just the short 3 letter version... exactly), it is seen by many as "Jiff". This isn't just a tangent that millions of folks just came up with out of the blue. There is a Soft G in which G is pronounced as J. So when they see GIF they think "Jiff" instead. This is also now supported by the creator of GIF.

Both ways are right. You say Giff, I say Jiff. Both are logical pronunciations and we both mean the same thing.

Now before you start to write your 5 paragraph essay on how I am wrong, please watch this in its entirety:

Correct sir, just as the Oxford dictionary states, both pronunciations are correct, as an acronym, a hard G is the only correct way, and as a word, a soft G is the correct way, as the creator says.

My personal opinion is that acronyms aren't words though, even when pronounced as such biggrin.gif

Notice every single letter here is pronounced with the same sound as the word it represents.

Thanks.
Image Maximum > IMAX?
Absent Without Official Leave > AWOL

LOL even your example is incorrect. It's pronounced "jif" just get over it already.
This^

IMAX is pronounced with a hard I, unlike "image" which is pronounce with a soft I.

Or maybe BASIC

I don't pronounce "all" with a hard A, but that's just me. rolleyes.gif
