'Silent' CPU Fan Profile Safe? Asus BIOS

Thread Starter
Hey!

So I recently changed my bios cpu fan profile to 'Silent'. Is this risky?

I have a i7 3770k at STOCK CLOCK cooled by a Antec Kuhler 620.

I game, do not render videos.

I wouldn't do it, silent turns your fans off at certain temps. That means your fans and pump will not be running. If you are concerned with the noise download ASUS Fan Xpert and set fan curves that you cannot hear.

Doesn't this depend on your mobo? I don't think my motherboard turns the fans OFF on silent, they just run at low RPM until the CPU gets hot, then still only spin slow, and only get fast when the CPU gets really hot.

Mine just turn off and on @ a certain temp. Guess it depends on the board.

Silent works fine for me. I programed the power curve for the fans with the thermal radar software and set where i want the rpms to increase.

I have a Asus mobo and been using silent CPU profile. No problem so far.

If you really mind the noise, you can always swap in a different fan.

Mhmm. Thanks for the replies. I might just leave it on standard. thumb.gif

My board is an Asus.

Any fan shouldn't stop working in the CPU Fan.

The CPU Fan 4-pin controls fans by PWM.
This header doesn't control 3-pin fans by DC.
3-pin fans will run at full speed in the CPU Fan.

This is a picture about a speed test with PWM fan 600 rpm - 2000 rpm hooked in the CPU Fan.

According to the Fan Xpert the Standard and Silent profiles use about the same fan curve.
The min CPU Fan min duty cycle is 20% so both profles starts at 20% fan power.

The fan power doesn't affect 3-pin fans hooked in the CPU Fan.
They will run anyway at full blast.

From I've heard about the Asus boards, the CHA Fan 4-pin headers control any fan by DC.
They don't offer PWM fan control.
So at lower fan power the fan could stop working.

This is a picture about my 4-pin fan hooked in the CHA Fan 4-pin.
The fan stops working at 40% fan power.
But the default duty cycle for the CHA Fan is 60%.
