Need opinions regarding a power supply...

Hi,

I am doing a computer building workshop in a couple weeks. Most of the students are getting a PC where I have selected the parts and they will be assembling them and then get to keep the PC's.
I got a lot of awesome advice here.

Here is where my question comes in... One student opted to get his own parts for the class and I am not sure that I like his power supply choice. He has already purchased it. It is the power supply in question. It has 6 rails and isn't 80plus certified. Has anyone had experience with this PSU? I am not sure I like the looks of it. I have had no experience with this brand.

Thanks guys.

LOL, yeah that's what I am thinking. I may buy a decent PSU and trade him for it. I could put the crap PSU in a old PC or something. It would just pain me to see the kid have an exploding computer. I wish he had asked me first. He went way overkill with the mobo and CPU and went way under the mark on his PSU, HDD, and couldn't even afford a GPU at this time.

Just because a design's vastly dated doesn't mean it's any more likely to blow up computers these days as it was several years ago.

It's old Super Flower. There's probably no reason he should've gotten it, especially at normal pricing and considering how he couldn't even afford one GPU (wut?), but it shouldn't be dangerous.

It doesn't really have 6 rails. It may have 6 separate current sense lines, but I doubt that, too.

More important than 80plus certification is safety certification by an organization such as UL, CSA, or TUV. While the label shown in the link indicates such certification, I say it's fake because no registration numbers are listed next to the certification symbols. In comparison, notice that the label from a 750W Corsair includes the registration numbers:

I couldn't find a review of the 1000W Xion, but here's what JonnyGuru.com said about a 700W model:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&file=print&reid=109

Notice that it also had no registration numbers listed for its safety certifications. It passed tests but became hot enough to create burn marks on the circuit board. The real manufacturer was Super Flower, but the 1000W model may be from another company or be of a different design.

WOW! Just read the review. Pretty awful!

What do you guys suggest I do? Perhaps I should buy a good used unit and trade the kid for it? I don't want him to have that PSU. I feel bad for him.

Here is a listing of the parts he bought:
Ram

CPU

MOBO

HDD

Case
