Nah, XFX XXX, the bronze one, 850W modular (which is Seasonic M12II 850W) is very good. It's just funky at high temps near max load, stretched a little far. You'd need three graphics cards and power supply facing inwards, plus some other stuff, to make that happen. Actually, I think HardOCP noticed something on that platform near 850W before as well.

XFX XXX, the silver one, is based on an older but superior design (Seasonic M12D... used to be king a while back). But dude, this guy can't even afford one graphics card now? Is he going to have three later? Even if you assume two later, as long as they're not like GTX 780s / Titans / HD 7970s on heavy overclocks... 650W or so is okay.

You can get a Capstone 650W for $64. It's a bit better than the Seasonic M12II:

A bit worse than all of these but still good and fully modular is the OCZ ZT 750W $80, $55 AR:

Core Pro (non-modular, 80 plus bronze) 450-550W are group-reg old-school Seasonic S12IIB.
XXX (80 plus bronze, modular; discontinued P1) 650W was some kind of custom platform or mishmash.
Core Pro (non-modular, 80 plus bronze) 650-850W are DC-DC Seasonic SS___AT (non-modular version of high-wattage M12II), seen also in Corsair TX V2.
XXX (80 plus bronze, modular; SPS) 650-850W are Seasonic M12II (650W+ models)
Black Edition (80 plus silver, now rebranded as XXX) are Seasonic M12D

All the 80 plus gold and platinum stuff, Black Edition and whatnot, are Seasonic X / Platinum. Some of this stuff is called ProSeries too. Some of the above may also be called Pro.

I don't think any of the XXX are 80 plus gold. If any of us are confused, let's just blame XFX and call it a day. Let's not even get started on EasyRails.

What do you guys suggest I do? Perhaps I should buy a good used unit and trade the kid for it? I don't want him to have that PSU. I feel bad for him.

Here is a listing of the parts he bought:
Ram

CPU

MOBO

HDD

Case

dat Antec 900 doh.gif

Is there any way you could make him RMA everything? It's quite awful IMHO.

I just got even more confused

XFX needs to be slapped hard and get their name system in order same thing goes for Thermtake with the 2 TR2 series Corsair with 3 HX series and Cooler Master with 2 GX series

I am about to get this 650watt that mikeaj recommended.

Does everyone concur that this unit is good? Looks like a great bargain. Is 650watts enough for that i7 overclocked and an HD 7850? I'm sure it is but I just don't want to mess up again so I wanna ask.

@splinterize LOL yeah he went overkill and underkill. with no balance to his parts. He is going to keep the mobo and cpu. Everything else he is trading me for and I am going to see what I can get on Ebay. He is getting an HD 7850 GPU.

Yes, the Capstone 650 is an excellent unit (SF Golden Green platform, all Nippon Chemi-con capacitors) and could handle an OC'd i7 and two Radeon 7850s easily.
