Right now I'm all about the Fractal Design Arc Midi R2, which is $70 shipped (w/ promo code EMCXRVW45 ending 5/27/13).

It's got 3 fans and a fan controller included, excellent build quality, and doesn't look like a case targeted at 12-year-olds.

What do you guys suggest I do? Perhaps I should buy a good used unit and trade the kid for it? I don't want him to have that PSU. I feel bad for him.

Here is a listing of the parts he bought:
Ram

CPU

MOBO

HDD

Case

What is he doing with an i7 , a $110 case, and a crap 1000W PSU? :O

BTW if confused....

All XFX is Seasonic built I believe

edit: Arc Midi R2 svenge posted is a good bet

Thanks guys! for all your help with the PSU and case. I went with the tempest 410 elite case because I think he will like it best. He seems to like the gaudy style a bit being that he's a younger kid. The cases you guys recommended is probably something I would have gone with for myself though. The tempest does have a lot of fans and cool features for 80 bucks though.

His parts are now:

Case

HDD

MOBO

CPU

PSU

RAM

GPU

@alphac yep he messed up a little but it was his first go around. He should have went with a lesser CPU and mobo and he would have saved a bundle. And of course went with a different case and PSU lol.

Also, I got him this CPU cooler. He wants to overclock and this will allow a very small overclock and it was only 15 bucks. If he wants to go higher he'll have to get another cooler later.

btw the Capstone promo code isn't showing up on the product page, but it's there when you're browsing I think...?

RW20PPSU for 20% off.

Personally I don't really like that spending $180 on the most basic HIS 7850 model, even if it has 2 GB of VRAM. Maybe a cheaper 1 GB or better 2 GB model is a better buy, if not something else entirely. A quick look around turns up this:

Looks like a solid build now.

I would've picked the GTX 650 Ti BOOST 2GB or GTX 660 2GB as the video card instead, but then again I'm an NVIDIA guy.

Yeah that second one would have been a good buy. I am usually a very good bargain hunter but after doing this project for the school students and dealing with so many different people my head has been spinning. He is kinda stuck with the card I got him cause it has already shipped. I think he will still like the card I picked but admittedly the second one you posted would have been a bit better. I have had HIS AMD cards and they always seemed good.

I would have too and I did for my own rig (I have the EVGA GTX 550ti Boost) but I am actually going to sell those games that come with the card to recoup some of the money I am putting out for this kid lol. He is also going to pay me some cash and I will be selling his Antec case and the PSU as well. I will probably still be in the hole a little bit but hopefully not.

To our OP (or if you prefer, Thread Starter).I present you with a chance to make a bit of a name for yourself. Do some real careful shopping and show how close you can come to his level of performance (with that 329.00 cpu) for a ton less money. These high end (and expensive) cpu's outshine their much cheaper brothers in benchmarks and in jobs that are done by a few. Make the center point of what you create to be value, without giving up much in performance. Demonstrate that you know the value of a dollar. I would even be tempted to bring in some X58 gear that still has some warranty. Used X58 prices have fallen tremendously (how would you like to only spend a third what others are spending)but they still deliver great performance, and value. Have your idea about overclocking prepared (the rational behind it) so you can speak with knowledge. Explain how overclocking used to be a way to get extra performance without paying a premium. Or you can spend like it is someone else's money. Most can pick the most expensive gear but much fewer can pick the gear that delivers value.
