Spilt beer on my 680... - Page 2

Ouch. This is the realization of my greatest fears living in a college dorm. I usually cover my machine in a trash bag if we have a "busy" night planned. And unplug it. And put it under my desk. Paranoia does great things.

Best of luck getting it sorted out, but if nothing comes of it, maybe you could make some cool art out of the dead 680. Alternatively you can probably sell it on fleabay to some guy who thinks he can fix it. I've seen "dead" 980x's go for 300+ on ebay.

Also, if you are willing to risk putting it in a system with another 680, you could run it as the second card and see if it will fold at all. Perhaps only the output is damaged, but the actual computational abilities of the card remain.

Pretty funny actually, not to long ago I moved my PC to the current place it's at. If I hadn't moved it, the beer would missed it by miles... mad.gif

I can't seem to find any stickers that say "warranty void if removed". Aren't those usually on top of some screws ?

What's the make of the 680? I know I was able to remove the cooler on my ASUS card (they even recommended it for one card when I told them that the backplate was loose) and it didn't void anything. Each manufacturer has different policies.

It's MSI.

Looked at both cards and can't spot any warranty stickers.

Nevermind, read your rig. Not sure about MSI. Worth perusing their site for info I guess.

You're not Logan from TekSyndicate are you? All joking matters aside I would look up on the manufacturer's site to see what the warranty entails. I know EVGA doesn't care if you remove the stock cooler but don't know much about any other companies

This is from the MSI Canada page:

"The product MUST be returned to MSI in the original factory configuration and condition. All aftermarket modifications must be reversed prior to sending in the product for repair or replacement."

I read that to imply that as long as you put it back the way it was, you can take the cooler off.

my void warranty sticker was right on a screw holding the heatsink in place, but its an msi twin frozer card. I would think they could tell if it was removed, but if they didn't put a sticker right where you can see it, they might not care as much if it is taken apart.

sorry about your losses, and about the card and about the fallen Heineken frown.gif

I would definitely suggest taking it apart though, you would be able to tell if something was fried, there will probably be a burn mark. but the fact that it is still producing video gives hope that a good ol' oven baking might get it back in working order.
