Spilt beer on my 680... - Page 5

there should be a number of screws holding the stock heatsink on....remove all the screws necessary, and use the isopropyl rubbing alcohol to clean the pcb of the card. I don't think msi will care if you replace the TIM, I know asus and evga don't care at all and even recommend it. once you clean the pcb, stick it in a bag of rice to get ALL the liquid off the card. then once its completely dry, I mean dry as horn.....repaste the gpu with some good thermal paste and then reapply the heatsink and reassemble the whole card and make sure all the screws go back in......then you can attempt a boot with the card by itself. best possible scenario, your card lives on and works....receive happiness. worst case scenario you've bricked your gtx 680, in which case you know never to have an open can of beer near your gaming pc. if worst case scenario does indeed occur, attempt an RMA to msi or a return to the store for an exchange.

You can "wash" the cooler once taken off the pcb in some isopropyl alcohol but you will want to sponge bath the actual GPU with it.
Any sort of force with liquids can damage the card, so just gently rubbing away the mess will work fine. Isopropyl alcohol will do the cleaning, you are more of just applying it to the card. It evaporates extremely quickly so you will need to keep wetting the cloth or swab you are using.

The Caps on the GPU can store electricity so putting it into a Dishwasher is basically suicide. The heat and water pressure can easily damage the card.

No mater what part in a pc you should always replace the TIM if you try to use the old stuff you will have air bubbles and make your cooling efficiency take a nosedive. Also if you use isopropyl alcohol you do not need to soak in a bag of rice, because it evaporates pretty quick at room temperature also makes a great cleaning agent.

Thanks for all the advice so far, really appreciate it.

Will be popping the hood on it tomorrow since I don't have the required tools at hand right now. I'm just hoping that there is no visible damage on the card which could indicate water(beer)damaging.

I'd wait lol. Get the proper tools, soak it in alcohol, scrub what you can off very lightly. Soak it in rice for 72hrs. If that doesn't work, RMA it. If that doesn't work, bake it.

Just keep it in a bag of rice for a few days then keep it by the heater again and try your luck with an RMA smile.gif

i just told them the card stopped working. basically what happened was the water got into the pci power connections and messed them up so that starting the computer with the card plugged in would result in total system failure. 7950 worked totally fine. so i cleaned up the card, made sure all screws were intact, and off it went. if it was a $200 card i wouldnt have bothered but it was a 500 dollar evga signature+ so i had to do what it took to get a refund.
