ATH-AD900X a worthy upgrade from ATH-AD700?

Thread Starter
Audio Technica ATH-AD900X vs ATH-AD700:

I currently have the ATH-AD700 series headphones and I love them but I saw the new line of Audio Technicas and I like the look of them and they sound like they are quite a bit improved.

Is it worth upgrading though? Will I notice a difference at all? I love my AD700's, I don't like the look of them (that's not a big deal though)

Are there any real big differences between the two? (build quality?)

I currently have the Creative Sound Blaster Z and the Headphone port, is that a decent headphone amp to power these?

If it is worth upgrading where is the best place to grab them?

Yes, and no.

To someone who really likes the ATH-AD700 sound stage and fit, then yes. You get better bass and warmer mids.

To someone who is looking for a clear upgrade, then you would probably want to look at getting a used pair of hifiman HE-400s. They weigh a bit, but nothing too extreme to keep you from buying them. MUCH better bass than the AD-700s. The mids are much fuller and warmer too. thumb.gif
