GF's computer build - Page 2

not to be against everyone here but why not add an extra 30 to that $80 and get a good 990fx board like this one
which will make it semi-future proof and will support the steamroller as well.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157281

plus it just makes sense to get a chipset that supports all the newer stuff

You may do well to check the FS Forums here on OCN as well. Lots of gear to be had at good prices.

Why is not anybody recommending a a10 apu? You can crossfire it with a 6670 and blam you got a mid level gaming rig

Why are you buying a 250GB HDD and a 500GB HDD? You could likely get 1TB for around that price. Also the 250GB is IDE not SATA so you either need an antique motherboard or an adaptor (and it will be slow). Also you can get a 7770 for cheaper than that 650 and it's a better card.

Here is 8GB of faster better RAM and $20 cheaper too http://microcenter.com/product/382101/Ballistix_Sport_8GB_DDR3-1600_(PC3-12800)_CL9_Dual_Channel_Desktop_Memory_Kit_(Two_4GB_Memory_Modules)

Lean away from that 4100..and towards a true quad-core Deneb..or maybe fx-6300;I'd still prefer a Deneb.

I accidently posted the wrong link to the hard drive - I looked at that one first and realized that. The reason for a lower HDD though is I am physically separating her drives and making one just a OS drive with all the programs, I can also slap it into my external bay then if ever needed to troubleshoot stuff if anything happens to it or need to reformat it while leaving one just for storage intact however at this point I honestly am just looking at a TB drive, logically separate them and I'll just make her backup her stuff externally.

As for the graphics card I am actually leaning toward just getting this and then giving her the one out of my desktop but is just older, we could both benefit from that.

Go for the TB HDD if it's cheaper and partition it into 2 separate partition. 250GB for the OS and 750GB for Data/Games. That way you will be able to troubleshoot it more often and wipe the OS without wiping all of the Data/Games. I also second the notion of motherboard with the on-board GPU card instead of buying an extra GPU. This way, you can upgrade it at a later point when she really wants it and get her an even better GPU for whatever game she may want to play. I recently built my girlfriend a computer for super cheap [$250]. I think I am more proud of that build, then anything else. smile.gif

So I priced out a $600 build for her basically..... UPDATE - she spent about $1100. FX6300 ended up with a pretty good ASRock mobo, jumped up to a 650 Ti GPU with a corsair 600W power supply, 2TB HDD and somehow ended up with a bluray burner (even I have just a reader) and 8GB 1333 RAM.....And 2x 22" ASUS monitors. Women are even dangerous shopping at Micro Center.

I also ended up with a 600W power supply and 8GB of ram myself toward building my lower end computer just to run Server 2010 for testing purposes at home. It WAS however $25 off the power supply and $30 off the RAM.

You can get the i3 3225 at microcenter and get a free motherboard with their current combo.

That should run about $120

Why do you want 2 500GB and not 1 1TB?

If she's playing Minecraft and some FB games, I'm pretty sure integrated graphics works. You could maybe get a 7770 or a 650Ti Boost if you want something that's better for cheap.
