Need some advice on how to set up my network

Thread Starter
Hi guys, so here's my deal. My parents house is having some bad wifi connectivity issues. This is because our router is placed in the basement utility room which has concrete walls.

Our house is wired for ethernet and they all run down to that utility room, same with the cable. My question is, could I keep the modem there and plug a 10/100/1000 switch into the modem. Then plug all the cables that are wired to outlets into that switch. Then in the office upstairs on the main level, plug the router into that wall outlet. The only things using wired ethernet in our house right now is our TV/TiVo box/Blu-ray Player. Everything else runs on wireless.

Would doing that fix the problem? Otherwise, my mother is thinking of buying a new router then that would have better range. We currently have the Netgear WNDR3400 (N600 Dual-Band Router).

BTW, all their computers are Apple, except 1 laptop, so I was thinking of getting her the Airport Extreme since it would play well with Time Machine (to back up her stuff) and her iPad and everything.

So questions:
1) Would my plan to hook the modem up to a switch which then connects the ethernet outlets across our house and then hook up a router to one of those outlets work?
2) If that wouldn't would the AirPort Extreme be a good solution to replace our WNDR3400 router?
3) If not, what would be a better alternative?

Thanks.

You can buy repeaters to extend the range.

You could buy the airport extreme and turn your WNDR3400 into a repeater with dd-wrt . Here is some info:
http://www.dd-wrt.ca/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR3400
http://www.dd-wrt.ca/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge

I doubt the wifi signal will improve with the airport extreme by itself.

Your modem must be connected a router to properly share the internet, so hooking it up to a switch will not work.
