Slimline HTPC Case Options.

Thread Starter
My previous Mini-ITX build, a full spec watercooled i5 in a Silverstone FT03-Mini case is now stabel enough and happy enough i can start turning my eye towards sorting out the lounge.

As this is the HTPC forum you can probably guess what I'm hoping to build.

Internals wise I've had this lot recommended to me.
  • AMD A6-5400K Black CPU
  • MSI A75IA-E53 motherboard
  • 8GB Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey
  • Xigmatech Praeton LD963 cooler
In addition I've a 2tb 3.5" HDD and 120gb SSD to fit inside.

What I'm trying to track down is a decent low profile case with through-airflow and room for both a 3.5" drive and an optical.
My napkin maths puts the CPU/cooler just under 70mm in height, and if possible I'd like to fit the whole unit into a 100mm x 400mm slot under my TV.

Can you recommend anything?

you needing to play anything a Raspberry Pi can't handle? Obviously it won't handle games, I've not tried it with uncompressed MPEG2 DVB streams but it certainly handles 720p, 1080p h264 rips very well. No CD/DVD/BD drive though although I guess you could go for a USB one

Unless you're wanting to overclock, is there anything wrong with a stock CPU cooler? I've never owned an AMD processor so don't know what they're like but I built an i3 system for my mum about a year ago and the stock cooler was barely audible and was about 10-15mm high... I couldn't believe how shallow it was!

How about this case - http://www.quietpc.com/st-fc5-evo don't know anything about it but it looks sick and uses the aluminium body as the processor heat sink by the looks of it. Not cheap but and has restrictions on the motherboard power by the looks of it. Could be an old design but it looks like it uses an external power brick and a pico-psu so you should be able to replace it as required (I guess!)

You could use this one and pretend you have an iMac mini! http://www.quietpc.com/st-f1c-evo

I've used that motherboard with A8 and A10 CPUs and the stock cooler and it's pretty quiet.

I know a mini-ITX case that is 95mm high and it will fit 1 x 3.5" + 1 x 2.5" but no idea about that cooler. A 3.5" drive is usually 25.4 mm high. I think that's going to be tough to get in a 100mm space. You need some room above the cooler for airflow. I think the 3.5" drive will smother it.

So, I was thinking something wider like the Silversone ML03 but it's 105mm high. You really need a case where the 3.5" drive is not above the motherboard but beside it. Everything I find though is too tall.

Thin mini-ITX is Intel, not AMD so those cases won't help.

Can you move the 3.5" drive external?
