the architecture of the PS4 GPU is a modified GCN as is the Xbox One. They use the same 8 Jaguar cores for CPU. PS4 has 50% higher perfomance and that is a big difference. Also unlike last generation where Sony's platform was difficult to develop for, this time they are both going to be similar (with slight differences) and easy to develop.

"Note that unlike the Xbox 360 vs. PS3 era, Sony's hardware advantage here won't need any clever developer work to extract - the architectures are near identical, Sony just has more resources available to use."

It's not about horsepower anymore, nor it's about who has the better title's. It's going to come down to who has the better overall experience. I also have both consoles and both were used extensively for more than 6 years. MS milked me more than Sony did, I had a bit more fun on the PS3 playing my oldschool games and had a blast with Live but I didn't like the idea that I was not able to use my 360 as a web browser and I loved the fact that Sony "Online" was totally free. My first PS3 was backwards compatible, I was able to play all my old games until it YLOD'ed. After that my days of playing oldschool games went downhill since the newer versions of the PS3 were no longer backwards compatible.

In the end it's not about who's game looks better, to be honest they most likely will look the same unless you want to nitpick and count the jaggies..

well, and this time i think they are trying to do what Nintendo did with the Wii, and appeal to a more general audience

looking forward to genuine PS4 exclusives , mainly the arty farty indie ones. They already look trippy on PS3 but they dont always offer 1080p or 60FPS. There should be some proper mind dribbling experiences with the better hardware now

the playstation has always catered to the 20 something cluber on a come down, the xbox to the 13yr old fat kid who likes COD

the only good-downside is that most of these indie titles now come out on steam too ! so its getting harder to choose a console as your only missing out on literally 3 - 4 titles on each console that the PC doesnt get but the 10,000 other games it does and you can mod them, run 1440p, 1600p, 2160p, triple or six screen @ 120fps or perhaps next year even VR headsets and have keyboard and mouse support too redface.gif

As far as settings go I personally would speculate on "high" settings with that GPU in PS4 just with low or no AA applied. Depends on engine ofc, my standards are somewhat outdated, Metro 2033, Crysis 1 and even unreal and source engines smile.gif With source engine you can do at that reso max everything and ~ 120 fps. But thats ofc rather old engine by now even with all the updates done to it. When you hit high resolutions the amount of memory you have and memory bandwidth tend to get the main bottlenecks. The theoretical peak pixel fill rates are magnitude or two above these constraints usually.

In my opinion one of the usual problems with "high or ultra" settings is that these tend to overdo AA by quite a significant margin. I mean x16 AA is pretty pointless when you are sitting at 70 cm from your 23'' 1080p screen. Perhaps x2 AA would have some point if you have unnaturally good eyesight.

The push towards 3D is what I feel they're missing the boat on, between Hollywood's push and AMD and NVIDIA's efforts, I had thought it would be integrated into these systems, that's the only reason I brought up 60 FPS. Console players are used to 30 FPS, so 60 FPS 3D would have been a reasonable target for these consoles, support for 3D Blu-ray but not games seems odd to me.

It'll be interesting to see how this turns out, these consoles are more of an evolution than a revolution. If nothing else they should push gaming towards better multi threaded performance, but they really feel like the set top boxes we were promised in the 90's.

I don't think I've seen one article for PS3 like this

butbutbut they shipped more PS3s!!

Butbutbut this buttbutbut rrod butbubut damage control

Like I said, I am living proof people don't just re-buy a console because they're already invested in it.

You might "know" someone who you THINK re-bought the console because they were invested, I BOUGHT a new xbox 360 because it was superior to the ps3 and wii for what I wanted out of console. (and I already owned a PS3+Wii)

I am not sure where you are coming from.

To say that people didn't purchase another 360 due to a RRoD is a bit weak. People absolutely purchased the console again after the RRoD, because they were invested in the system. This isn't unique to gamers, but to anyone with a serious hobby. The fact is a significant number of 360 sales were people replacing a dead console. Now, to be fair, a significant number of PS3 sales were for the Blu-Ray function. Why spend $700 on a BR player when you could buy a PS3 for a few hundred less?

You article is also a speculative article, and you shouldn't use it in any sort of debate, as it is speculation. Not to mention it is a speculation into the year 2017!

All considered, we all know the 360 sold more units than the PS3, that is fact. So, I am not sure why you are getting super defensive and attacking a neutral party to the conversation.

So much talk about memory in these machines... why does a cutdown 7850 need 7GB of it anyway?

After looking at the video again I think it may of been the city as a whole? That's one of the things that impressed me about it was how despite the surrounding city looked huge it was all still high res and clean looking.

Heh, I've always felt 3D was really nothing more than a desperate push from the movie industry to keep cinemas relevant in a day and age where everyone has 40-50 inch TV's and media players (or HTPC's).

Meanwhile in gaming, 3D has proven time and again to be more of a downgrade (or hindrance) in visuals than adding anything wholesome.

Depends on the game, I agree that 3D is pointless and can be detrimental in fast paced games like FPS, RTS and Racing games. Imersive and/or whimsical games as well as exploration games can benefit from 3D if properly applied, games like Shadow of Colossus, or semi interactive games like Pokemon style games could be fantastic with 3D effects.

The issue with most of the current movies (looking at you Star Trek Into Darkness) is how forced the 3D feels. I really wish 3D would be seen as an invitation to make new styles of films that wouldn't be complete without the effect.

I wonder how different the numbers would be if some people didn't buy 2 - 3 360's due to RROD's.
