Thread Starter
Like the title said, I am working on getting parts for a new computer and right now I am set on having a 3770k for my processor. Its been around for a while, and has proven to be reliable and well made.

For the budget I am spending on my computer the 3770k is the best thing that I could get, for a 3D workstation. But the new 4770k is coming out soon. Is it worth waiting for it?

I know that the 4770k is better but i have two concerns. The first is if I can trust a processor that has just come out yet. The second is the issue of a motherboard. I have yet to find a good LGA 1150 board. With the 3770k i could just get one of many LGA 1155 boards.

I would wait because you will see better power efficiency and greater performance.

If you can wait another 6 weeks it might be worth it. There will be plenty of mobos coming out. Theres very little info on them at present because still under NDA but some previews have come out for Asrock, MSI, Gigabyte and ASus and they all look promising. They all look to be very similar to 1155 boards but with support for PCI gen 3, some have 802.11AC wifi, a lot more power phases and a few other specialist features depending on manaufacturer.

There should be no issue with first gen 4770k as its an evolution of the previous gen rather than a totally new architecture.

As previously stated it will be a little more power efficient, as well as being a little more powerful in muultithreaded apps.

If your use was gaming I wouldnt bother waiting but for your use its worth it IMO

I don't think so. I'd wait for Ivy Bridge clearance though.

If it's for production, you want reliability and Z87 is known to have minor bugs already (just like Sandy Bridge p67 motherboards when it came out).

All pre-release previews suggest it runs hotter and has about 10% gains (CPU wise) over Ivy Bridge.

What kind of 3D? You should see if hyper threading is really that important to the application, runs hotter on 3770k than say 3470k.

Might be worth gettin a 3930K or whatnot. Socket 2011. Maybe waiting for Ivy-E. Depends on your specific workload. But I wouldn't expect more than a 10% discount on Ivy once Haswell comes out.
