I'm sorry, but, doesn't that just mean they have a patent on accessing computer-data in general?
Who the hell gave them the ok for these patents ._.
Money did. Money is what gets you through the patent system. That's why you see all these great products with "patent pending" on the side.
The problem here isn't Apple, although they have odd business practices (no more so than any other large corporation though, other than Newman's Own) the problem is the patent system. It's archaic and was put into place to solve a problem now, not 100 years from now.
What needs to happen is once a technology becomes common knowledge, like a flat screen, or a rubber tire, then the patent needs to be invalidated. Heres an example:
Someone invents a display for your window, completely clear, you can use your windows in your house or car as monitors or televisions.
They file a patent.
US patent office grants the patent.
Company profits for 2 or 3 years.
Other companies start to copy technology or license it.
It becomes widely accepted that this monitor technology is superior to all others, no company wants to make old panels any more.
Patent office invalidates patent.
Or just no more lawsuits allowed, staff the patent office with some guys who take violations and investigate them, then fine the perpetrator.
