There's no news here, the current consoles support PhysX just as well, that is only on the software side. Nvidia will never let GPU PhysX outside it's own GPUs unless they're been paid a hefty amount. And no one is going to ever do that.

GPU physics will get some new momentum with these new consoles, but they'll use OpenCL most likely. I doubt that developers will bother to make a PhysX version of their titles just for Nvidia owners. Nvidia will have to sponsor any PhysX games like it has done so far.

Only when they're used, but in this case its arguable. Nvidia dominates in the development world with mostly closed-source APIs and SDKs.

Nvidia has been invested in compute since GTX 8800 G80 series GPUs where AMD just started taking compute serious with the 7970. That's a 6 year gap...

Open standards mean crap if they are unsupported and incompatible across platforms such as the case with many instances of the Open standard.

You statement about 6 year gap is bogus. Amd started many years ago also.

That is one of the main reason they were first with Dx11 that Nvidia down played at first.

...because Intel bought Havok and squashed HavokFX.

AMD and NVIDIA both had demoes with GPU-accelerated HavokFX like 5 years ago. Intel bought them out shortly after and then NVIDIA decided to by Ageia PhysX.

He's right.... Nvidia invested and designed for GPGPU since the G80. AMD only focused on GPGPU with their Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture.

DX11 is not GPGPU... it's completely unrelated.

For an open standard to succeed, you need either mass adoption or an evangelist. Only NVIDIA was evangelizing GPGPU for years so they do currently own the marketshare in that field. OpenCL is growing though.

And this is going to compete with OpenCL accelerated Bullet Physics Library how?

Game devs are going to have a choice between using FOSS Bullet or forking over money to Nvidia to use a physics engine that was not only not designed to be ran on the competitor's hardware, but to run worse on it.

Nvidia is the king of spin, they had no problem flat out skipping GTX 300 high end series and delaying Fermi because they couldn't even make the chip, and it did nothing to their reputation.

I expect to see this in some UE4 based games and that's about it. Sony is a huge backer of Bullet and FOSS, MS has DIrectCompute, Nvidia is left outside in the cold with CUDA and PhysX. But of course this is the kind of softball "news" I'd expect from a press release, it's basically Nvidia saying "see we can do things PhysX isn't irrelevant next gen!!!"

So, the question is does Nvidia optimize PhysX for AMD CPUs to keep it in consoles? Do they transfer that over the PC and hurt Geforce sales? Will developers choose TWIMTBP program over Gaming Evolved? Will Gaming Evolved, and AMD's insistence on open standards, cause a problem if developers want to use PhysX? And will developers be willing to give up AMD support (if they have it) for PhysX when there's better alternatives out there that run on everything instead of solely Nvidia products?

Hopefully PhysX dies off already and is replaced with Bullet or something more open. Nvidia has played dirty with it for far too long, and I've always been bitter over what Nvidia has done. They basically took a cool technology that relied on an add-in card that anyone could buy and turned it into a "omg here's the yearly 'kewl' PhysX game, that makes 3 good PhysX games, BUY GEFORCE FOR PHYSX!!!!"

If I could see PhysX die off in lieu of OpenCL and Bullet I think I'd be pretty damn happy.
