Vote: Ideastorm: Alienware: High-gamut or IPS matte screens

"It would be nice if Alienware offered higher-gamut or IPS matte screens. Many potential customers require the GPU power of an Alienware and use their laptops outside or for professional work. Alienware's competitors offer high-quality matte screens, and such screens are already available for Dell's XPS and Precision models. Good anti-glare screens would remove the need for customers to create costly, risky modifications to replace the glossy LCD or remove the plexiglass above. Even if Alienware offered matte screens as optional upgrades to the glossy panels now available, the option would provide much additional value for Alienware laptops."

I do hope that Alienware considers adding these screens to its upcoming generations of laptops.

Note: I use the word "or" in the logical sense, which does not preclude "higher-gamut" and "IPS.

IPS primary advantage over TN screens is that it has better viewing angles... And that's pretty much it.

IPS is not needed if you don't plan on sharing the laptop with someone else, and if you don't want other people to snoop on what you're looking at.

I know that IPS and "quality" are not synonyms, but people associate the two with each other. I wouldn't mind if Alienware offered high-end TN screens.

I used the title for two reasons:

1. To grab attention
2. The only quality screens Dell uses in the Precisions are IPS, and I wouldn't want Dell to install the mediocre TN panels offered on Precisions in Alienwares.

The 1080p screen on the current R4 is equivalent to the 90% Gamut screen found on the Clevo systems. That's why they cost another $180 to add it. tongue.gif

Also, IPS panels look MUCH better than the TN panels, and viewing angles matter a LOT to gamers. The ability to shift a lot and not sit in ONE spot the whole time makes you feel much more relaxed and whatnot. The slightest shift up or down with a TN panel tends to make the coloring look Inverted.

I think that the m17x's screen is 72% gamut.

It's certainly not bad, but I don't know if "certainly not bad" is good enough for a laptop that costs hundreds more than its competitors. Not everyone gets good deals, especially those who do not live in the US; I don't know if I would have bought my r4 over a Clevo/MSI/Thinkpad/Dell Precision with 95% gamut or IPS screens if I didn't find an excellent deal.

If you're 'slow' enough to buy straight from the site without any research or anything related to research, then you're probably gonna get screwed over. If you're smart, then you'll call and haggle the price down like most do. wink.gif
