In situations like this $650 is actually their go-to price...

It sucks that AMD skipped their refresh this year. Would be nice to get a 8970 20% faster than 7970GE, which would force the 780 down to $499.

GTX 280 that came out at $650 offered 35% more performance than the 8800GTX that had then been discounted to $380.

People need to stop screaming about $2500 Maxwell chips. The prices are set according to the situation of the market, they're not going to follow some arbitrary $500 limit. $650 has been Nvidia's big chip price when they're well ahead of AMD/ATi. If that's true they could just release big card and blow nvidia out of the water right?

GK104 (GTX 680) die size: 294mm^2
Tahiti (7970) die size: 365mm^2
GK110 (Titan/780) die size: 551mm^2

In short: yes.

(Note: a thing to consider about GK104 vs Tahiti when it comes to performance per mm^2 is that Tahiti does 1/3 FP64 while GK104 only does 1/24 FP64; such double precision units need a lot of die space so it's not entirely fair to compare perf/mm^2 using games alone)

The 8800GTX completely destroyed the previous fastest GPU (the $500 X1950XTX) by sometimes a margin over 100%, and then the GTX 280 was something like 40% faster than the 8800GTX.

This chip is around 35% faster than its predecessor and the launch price is $150 higher. And considering the cheaper, faster 7970, it's not like its predecessor was any kind of price/perf champion.

GeForce Titan - $1000

GTX480 - $500

P.S. no one complained when prices spiked going from 6800 to 7800, and going from 9800 to 280.

Well, then we had AMD(ATI) far behind nVidia in performance and market share. Things are not the same anymore. We will see....
For the love of gawd... it just comes down to money. Would any of these AMD fans turn down a free Titan or 780? Of course not. If everyone could afford these cards, everyone would have them. For those of us who CAN afford them... we don't care about the price. These cards rock!

I feel like this is a very fair assessment. I really can't see a single thing that AMD offers over nVidia. Every argument an AMD fan makes is the same. "Just as good"... "way cheaper"... etc. These are common arguments. However, AMD cards lack CUDA cores and don't process data nearly as efficient for things other than games. There are other examples we could cite but we all know them.

I guess I'm just sick of the AMD vs nVidia and AMD vs Intel arguments. They are pointless. NVidia/Intel > AMD. The whole thing can be summarized by the following:

Haves... and have not's.

Aren't we the market?
We certainly get lectured to take responsibility for our actions when making buying decisions about the Titan by a lot of folks.
This is the only industry I know where prices are dictated by the Seller (Nvidia) , and everyone (buyers) is supposed to shut up about it. really, the only industry, and I know a lot of industries
