Small computer for cloud service?

Thread Starter
Hello guys:

I would like to start my own/personal cloud service, and for that, I would like to have your advice.

I'm planning to buy a small computer (the smaller in size, the better), which shouldn't cost more than 400-500$ with low power consumption, and then have an external/internal hard-disk built into that. On that I will install some linux, and install the program SparkleShare, which will play the role of files cloud.

What do you think of this plan? What problems would you think it would have?
What small computer would you recommend for me to buy?

Thanks for any efforts.

Have you thought about a NAS like this? http://www.amazon.com/Synology-DiskStation-Diskless-Network-Attached/dp/B005YW7OLM/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1369323845&sr=1-2

Just bringing it up because it's often cheaper than a build your own solution. YMMV, though.

Not really! Thanks a lot man. The suggestion is great. But is this reliable and secure enough? Do you know of any problems in this system?

Cheers!

You could probably get away with any desktop/laptop you have laying around.
Just get some external HDDs and use that if you want to save money.

This would save money for now, but waste electricity. I live in Germany, and electricity is very expensive. I want something reasonable that could live forever and hold my data forever.

You can build a server for $200.... it'll be more powerful, flexible, and support more disks...
Once again...

You're right, but I want something small with low power consumption. Can you please suggest further how I'd build such server?

AMD E-350/450 CPU+motherboard.... these go for $50-100 and I believe idle at less than 20w.
System idle power: http://techreport.com/review/20401/amd-e-350-fusion-apu-on-the-desktop/5

$25 PSU like a Corsair 430CX
$30 2x2GB RAM....
$50 for a case....

That's under $200 for a powerful enough home server.
