Safe Fixed Voltage for i7 3770k? And OCing Ram Question

Thread Starter
Hi, this is my first time manually overclocking my CPU. Currently running at 4.2GHz, I've set the Core Voltage to a fixed 1.150, it shows 1.152V in CPU-Z while under load in Prime 95, and runs at around 65 degrees on my Evo 212 Hyper. Going to bed now, will see if my rig is still operational when I wake up.

Should it still be running, is 1.150v a safe voltage for 24/7? I went from Auto to Manual as it automatically set itself to 1.256 (?? or somewhere around that) at 4.0GHz.
Would the 5 hours that I'm asleep be a sufficient time for the test?

Also, I have GSkill Ripjaws F3-12800CL10, where I set the profile to XMP 1.2, as it was by default running at 1333MHz.
Is overclocking ram simple and easy? Should I have to worry about any voltages or temperatures? Can I simply change the "Auto" setting under DRAM Frequency to 1866 and if it boots up, leave it and rest assured, or should I be testing it some how?

Sorry about all the questions, but thanks in advance!

I would run prime95 for atleast 12 hours, Mine got bsod'ed after +9 hours.
For the voltage part it would be better to leave it @ fixed with ur voltages. Cause with offset the voltage might get too low and cause instabilty.
I run my rig 24/7 @ 4.5 at 1.19 fixed so, as long as ur temps are fine you shouldnt worry and 65C is good thumb.gif

Hi, I've woken up and it's still running quite well.
However, after I disabled Prime95 and everything, I noticed that my multiplier remained at x42... So my pc stays clocked at 4.2GHz 24/7 even when on idle. I changed NOTHING besides the RAM profile and CPU multiplier... Any help? Is this dangerous?

My CPU clock speeds according to RealTemp are constantly jumping anywhere from 2700MHz to 4200MHz, and on CPU-Z remains at a stable 4.2GHz, sometimes dropping to 1.6 for less than a second and going back up to 4.2.

Thanks

You might have a background process going. Indexing, virus scanning, who knows. I wouldn't worry about it unless it persists for a while and/or through a reboot.

Overclocking RAM is neither simple nor easy. Your RAM should run at 1600 by default though, so if that's what the XMP is giving you I'd just leave it. It'd be hard to get more than 1800, and you'd have to tweak other settings.

If I were you, I'd focus on getting an offset overclock to work, since it's just better. As for stability testing, Prime is good, but don't neglect other tools, like playing games. Prime just stresses the FPU and heats the chip. It's a great test of basic stability, but it can pass Prime and have other problems. I'd also check event viewer and look for WHEA errors (a specific kind of error). In general, it's stable when it's running non-buggy software and doesn't crash or throw errors. That is the definition of stable. It's always good to back up frequently.

Fixed, apparently the it was the work of the High Performance power plan. That never happened before, and I've had high performance on for ages.

here is the answer I give my buddies for safe.

-run the cpu at stock and monitor with hardware monitor to see the max voltage that the cpu goes to while running IBT or Prime95

-after that test enter that in for your manual cpu voltage(example 1.080)

-now your cpu is 100% safe running at the voltage your cpu would run at stock.

-see how far you can get on the stock voltage mine is 4.3 ghz the stock voltage of 1.080

-run the ram at your cpu's max spec(example 1600mhz for 3770k)

-lastly a medium to low end air cooler, I use a nh-d14 and max out at 50c max under prime and IBT(im delidded though)

of course this doesn't include minor bios tweaks and other things but when someone asks me what safe is that is truly safe.

I just upped my overclock. My i7 3770k is now running at 4.4GHz @ 1.185v**, I had Prime95 running for about 8 hours (overnight)...
Here's a picture: http://puu.sh/30xF9.png... They sit around 70-75ish after 8 hours of prime95, for the first few hours temps hover around 65.

So is this a safe 24/7 overclock?

I think so, I know I probably wouldn't hesitate to run it like that if it were my system. Prior to deciding, I'd want to see what temps get up to in real world usage... like playing a demanding game... if under 70 in that kind of usage... fine by me. From what you said, I expect you might stay under 60 when gaming for a few hours.

you said safe I explained what I call safe. on this forum it is here to push the cpu as much as you can. if you can keep temps under 80c max and 1.45v you are technically fine. I ran mine at 4.8ghz @ 1.36v for maybe a half a year but the games I play aren't cpu demanding to much and so I run at 4.3ghz @ 1.080v manual now and ram at 1600mhz cas 8. that is a good overclock on stock voltage and my gtx680 does the rest also at stock with a fan profile and done.
