Question on Setup: KRK RP5 G1, Dayton 120 Subwoofer, and PreSonus Firebox

Hey all,

I have a question regarding a new set up I'm trying to achieve. I have 2 KRK RP5 G1 Monitors, a Dayton 120 Subwoofer, and a PreSonus Firebox interface. The question I have is that the current setup is: 2x Balanced TRS to TRS wires from the monitors into the Firebox. If I were to add the subwoofer, how would I do so? The subwoofer has RCA low level inputs and outputs. The problem is that RCA is unbalanced.. So if I were to get, let's say TRS to Stereo RCA with an adapter from stereo to a mono RCA from each speaker into the outputs of the sub, then the same wires from the PreSonus Firebox to the inputs of the sub, would that work? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

So if you want to keep it simple and use the sub's crossover, you'd just lose the balanced output to KRKs (you'd have to figure out what to do with negative). Otherwise, you could use a balanced crossover for the sub (such as http://www.bryston.com/products/other/10B-STD.html) and then only the sub would be unbalanced. To be honest, the extra money for a balanced crossover probably isn't worth it unless you're running long interconnects or have the cords running through an EM nightmare.

Hey Electrocutor,

Thanks for the suggestion! I can use the sub's crossover, but I would have no idea what to do with the negative. Is there a ~50-75$ crossover or audio interface that you can recommend that will make this set up work?

Thanks!

Not me, the only time I've bothered with balanced is when it was convenient since my cable runs are short and I try to keep interconnects isolated and organized. You can probably poke around some places like the forums at audioholics and get some good suggestions: you may end getting a used one to save some coin too if you go that route.

As per "In most cases the negative output can be tied to ground, but in certain cases the negative output should be left disconnected", just try with a normal adapter first and see if you get any buzz/noise. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=240-438

Great! Thanks again. I'll try that out and see how it goes. In the meantime, if anyone else has any suggestions on a better 50-75$ crossover/audio interface(or is selling one), please let me know.

Hi Electrocutor,

Another question: When I am using the sub's crossover with RCA, am I plugging the input into the computer sound card? or the Firebox? Thanks again.

The Firebox probably has a better DAC than any onboard sound and low end sound cards: I can't say for certain since I don't own one. If you have a higher-end sound card, then you could probably make due without the Firebox altogether if you don't need the extra inputs/outputs. Not using the Firebox would also make your connections simpler because you would just run unbalanced throughout.

If you want to include the Firebox and use the unbalanced sub crossover, you'd have to get both http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=240-931 and http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=240-438 unless you can find a TRS to RCA adapter.

Thanks again for the info! So I tested it out yesterday and this is how I set it up: Mono RCA from each speaker into the L/R Outputs on the sub. From the sub, I used a stereo RCA from the inputs to the RCA outputs on my M-Audio Delta 2496. This works out fine, however I have a ground loop... Nevertheless, I ordered a Behringer Hum Destroyer (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KUD2G4/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and that should solve the issue when it comes in. I'll just put away the Firebox for now.
