I want to fix a monitor..

Thread Starter
I was given a monitor and it is stuck on VGA display. The buttons on the bottom do not work so I cannot change it to DVI. I believe the person told me that power went out and after that they had issues with it. The monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 953bw. I was told this could be a blown capacitor or something and I don't know if that is fixable or not, but if it is fixable I would like to fix it and give it to a friend of mine. I'll take any help at this point, so grace me with your infinite knowledge OCN biggrin.gif

it's stuck on the display because the buttons on it don't work at all. It is one of those weird monitors where its almost like touching the monitor. It's weird.

A blown capacitor is a very easy fix as long as you have a soldering iron, the knowledge to solder, and the right replacement component(s).
Step 1: Disassemble display and keep track of all the screws and their placement.
Step 2: Inspect the monitor's LCD controller (inspect the inverter and power supply too, as long as it's not external).
Step 3: Look for any burnt spots, broken traces, or capacitors with a bulging top, or other damaged componentry.
Step 4: Look for mechanical problems as well near the switches on the LCD controller board. It may not be switching due to a faulty button, broken trace, or broken components on the trace that leaves an open circuit.
Step 5: Once the problem is spotted replace components by desoldering the broken component and replacing it with a new one. If there is a broken/burnt trace, try to reconnect the trace with solder glue or by soldering a single strand of copper wire (search for more methods out there).
Step 6: Test in an ESD safe environment without reassembling monitor case
Step 7: If all goes well, the monitor should be able to switch between display modes! Good luck!smile.gif

It sounds like a capacitive touch sensitive button. You could get some cheap momentary mini push buttons and hook it up to the button leads. Could you please tell us what monitor this is?

Oops sorry I missed that. The Samsung Syncmaster 953bw does use touch sensitive buttons. Here are a couple of capacitor repair kits for this monitor. The more expensive kit includes 6in of lead based 0.032in solder, 8in of 0.1in, or 2.5mm copper desolder wick and a 125v pico fuse.
