To upgrade or Not to upgrade The big question

Hello folks,

I am having a argument with myself whether I should upgrade my cpu now or wait for the anticipated "steamroller"
I currently have the AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6ghz stock overclocked to 3.6ghz.

I have been wanting to purchase the FX-8350 but after reading into the new steamroller that will be released sometime in the future, it has made me argue if I should wait or not because some say it has up to a 20% performance increase.

The problem is I feel like my cpu which I have currently is what is holding me back on my system. I try to overclock past 3.6ghz but my ram speeds up and I have to downclock it all the way otherwise I crash and I feel like it is linked to my cpu it cant handle the ram speeds. I have a 6850 gpu but I know some games are rather cpu intensive aswell and I am not sure if its my cpu holding me back in games or my gpu. I was wondering on what all of your thoughts is on this situation. I also want to get more ram, I currently have 8gb but want 8 more but I am not sure if my cpu will be able to run at 3.6ghz If I add more.

Also If i am wrong about my cpu not being able to handle the ram speeds let me know so hopefully I can OC a little bit more, thats just the conclusion that I have come too.

After Bulldozer, I have absolutely NO trust in AMDs marketing / pr department.

Do whatever you think is best for you and hope everything works in the long run.

I think the x4 620 you're using is enough for the 6850. If you slap a little overclock on that, it will be even better.

I had an athlon II x4 640 @ 3.6ghz and 6gigs of ram. 2x ATI 6850s
went for an i5 2500k, now @ 4.3ghz -> 200 to 250% faster than the athlon. then got a single HD7970, 8gb of ram and now fps have gone around 350 to 400% higher... so yeah. upgrade.
I do recommend shifting to Intel. Gaming wise is quite better. Tough if you will use 8 cores with tasks such as design or 3d modeling or something of the sort then get an FX CPU. or go for an i7.
An athlon will hold you back if you have something better than a 6850, but up to that point it holds up quite well. Though at CPU intensive games you will suffer FPS loss, always. If you wish to play any game decently you need at least an i5 from sandy to haswell, any will do, 8gb of ram, and a mid end card of the latest generation. a 660Ti or a 7870 will run great.

This is taking into account that 30fps is the minimum bearable to play and 60fps is the ideal, if your monitor is 60hz. So yeah, unluckyly a 6850 is no longer the best price/performance king and most newer games will not run decently on high/ very high/ ultra...

I was going to start overclocking my 6850 a bit, I have never overclocked my GPU before and I think its about time to start working on that. I just hate upgrading and then a better upgrade coming out right after but in the end it will happen with anything you buy now a days.

I would shift to intel but the thing is I just upgraded my mobo not to long ago and ofcourse its amd not intel, I like AMD and I hope they start getting better with the products they release.
I was thinking of either getting a second 6850 (if i can find one the same as mine somewhere) or upgrading my GPU and waiting for cpu but once again I feel like my cpu is holding me back. I do like the haswells have heard lots of good things about them.

With my gpu I have run HeavenDx11 benchmark with many different results which I cant figure out whats causing the varieties they are rather extreme almost 800 points difference in tests 1 2 and 3, I am wondering if its my cpu affecting the results but I am pretty sure heaven benchmark is mostly gpu and not much cpu

There is always going to be something bigger and better just around the corner when it comes to PC technology. You are pretty much way overdue for an upgrade and would see a HUGE boost with an 8350. That CPU would max out your video card with no bottleneck. I say upgrade now! smile.gif
