Here's my .02, not like it matters:

Never in gaming history has a developer had the cash, backing of a publisher, and such huge amount of players to support a title as CoD.....yet look what we get. Bottom line: It's squandered potential.

They have the manpower and money to push boundaries and create something truly unique, yet they refuse. That's where the disappointment comes from, at least for me.

It was pretty easy to tell from the video that the game looked like it was from 2006/2007. It honestly didn't look like any upgrades were made at all from previous CoD games. I guess it really isn't surprising that of all companies Activision would just completely lie straight to everyone's faces and say it was a "next gen" engine when it obviously was not.

Exactly they could have been developing an actual next gen engine 4+ years ago and worked on it during the downtime (which by the looks of the games was about 2 years since clicking ctrl+c and ctrl+v then editing the title doesn't take much time.)

I agree. I have no love for COD but crying that there engine is not "new" even with out seeing it maxed out on a PC is just dumb. They claim its a significant upgrade in terms of fidelity. Well we'l see but crying foul when they are just doing with there engine the same as every other major developer is wrong.

I didn't see anyone complaining about Cryengine 3 not being a total rewrite when Crysis 3 was being developed.


Edit: I was looking at there engine demo and honestly it does look pretty decent if you ask me.

Only reason COD was ever any good was because the original IW crew put their heart and sole into making the best FPS they could. As soon as Activision saw the easy cash they could make after MW2, they royally screwed COD development, got rid of the brains behind the original IW crew, lost half the original IW devs, and then milked the game engine (that the original IW crew had created) for all it's worth, putting out games that are no better then the ones that came before them.

There is no hope for COD or IW when easy cash is the incentive behind both companies now - long gone is the Activision of old, once willing to give the IW devs the freedom they needed to create great COD games, now all we get is recycled game engines and new artwork - they should be called expansion packs now, not new games.

Also it's entirely possible to make a new engine (or an insane upgrade) in 2 years; Cryengine 2 (Crysis) came out November 13th, 2007. The first version of Cryengine 3 was October 14th, 2009. That's 1 year, 11 months and 1 day, and we got:
DX11 (new render path)
Tesselation
Massively increased performance (1 million polies in CE2 caused epicly low FPS, CE3 it's no issue)
Irradiance
Real-Time GI (was baked in CE2)
Light volume (physical based sun-shafts rather than screen-based in CE2)
Massively improved particles (shadows, moblur, etc.)
Screen-space reflections (technically a cheat, but still)
Pixel-accurate POM (improved over screen-based in CE2)
SSDO (up from SSAO)
Deferred render (rather than forward rendering)
etc.

Meanwhile IW, with its near infinite money from CODXYZ can't managed to finally go to a new engine, and has to stick to one from 1999 because "its too hard" to make a new one.... Haaaaaa


What is PROBABLY is, is that they think the upgrade to 1080p will mean enough of a change that the CoD fans will be pleased. Why invest the extra money in actually making a new engine, when you could just increase profit margins by using what works.
