Can lightning strike damage cpu?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, last night lightning hit very close to my home. All my power shut off for a split second and then back on.

Anyway, since then my pc is not running right. I was hoping it was the PSU which i swapped out and same exact issue. Here is the issue

Symptoms:

Lightning strikes last night, a split second power outage insues.

Today I turn on pc, starts booting, then shuts off right away. Reset cmos.
It will not turn back on again when trying to reboot, but there is still a blue light on the motherboard lit.

I change psu. Starts booting up again, then shuts off when im in bios.
Will not turn back on again, blue light lit on mobo just like before.

Anyway to cut a long story short, if I let it sit there 10 minutes or so, it seems to boot up, only to shut off again like before.

I think the mobos damaged for sure, but I heard somewhere that usually with lightning strikes only mobo takes the hit.

What are the chances that the cpu might be f'd as well?

Lightning power outage/surge can definitely harm your PC. It's up in the air your cpu is gone or another component. Just have to try the cpu in a working build to know for sure.

I don't know if the symptoms you are seeing are a result of the storm, but any and every device connected to the motherboard can be damaged. It depends on how much current the surge carries and the duration. You PSU and all peripherals should be hooked up to a surge protector, and better yet unplugged during a serioius lightning storm. If you actually had a power surge as a result of lightning, I would suspect there would be other damaged devices like alarm clocks and stuff. It's possible you have just one damaged device that is causing boot problems. After pulling the CMOS battery I would disconnect everything except for the boot drive and see if you can boot into the OS. If you can, then try connecting devices one by one and see if you can find a troublesome one. If that does not work I would look into having your main board checked out (you've already swapped the power supply.)

Yeah, it's more likely to be the motherboard or something. To speed up the CMOS clearing you can short the battery socket with a quarter or whatever.

It's almost always the Mobo before the CPU... but it's hard for anyone to say definitively what is wrong. But likely the mobo.

THanks for all the replies. New mobo on the way. Crossing fingers that it is the ONLY thing thats damaged.

And theres nothing else damaged in the house. But pretty much everything else was connected to a surge protector, so that may be why.

Also the lightning hit close, but not my house.

I think ill take the time to clean up the pc a bit. Maybe even redo the water tubing.

The likeliest possibility is that the BIOS and Firmware chips were fried upon the strike of lightning, thus disallowing any computing processes.

As robust as modern electronics are, they just aren't designed to handle 1.21 gigawatts of power...
