It is true that AMD has no need for big expensive low yield chips as their Firepro lineup is a flop.
400mm^2 @ 20nm could fit 2x the transistors of a hd7970 so it is pretty possible.

I'm going from my GTX 670 to the GTX 780 and selling my old card.

I'ts not only about the performance but the advantage of having a single-GPU for as long as I can and the sexiness of this card's reference-cooler is too damn high.
It would be fun to have a really premium card as well, even when it lacks performance in the future it will probably be quite easy to sell because it's such a premium-built card smile.gif

At least that's my take on it and my gut tells me to buy the GTX 780 and I've learned that I should trust my gut.

The reason being, by the time the new consoles and games are out, either way you will find that you are yearning for more power. Also, $250-350 for a second 670 or 680 will give you a lot more performance for the money than a ssingle 780.

I am curious to see if the 780 Classy or Lightnings come with a 6GB frame buffer and voltage control. If so, and if they clock to 1200+ core and 7000+ memory, I MAY consider them for 1440p gaming. Otherwise, I am sticking to 2 then 3 way 670 FTW SLI (and grabbing a 650Ti Boost for PhysX) until the 880 surfaces.

I don't think they will have 6Gb memory, or fully unlocked voltage control out of the box. The main advantage of the non-reference PCB is for the extreme overclockers, although they can be nice for the average guy knowing the cards can be pushed to the max with less risk of blowing mosfets, & frequently have looser OCP & OVP limits in the bios.

Well hey, a guy can dream, can't he? wink.gif

The 680 Lightning and 7970 Lightning(s) I've had all have been fully-unlocked when it comes to voltage control, and I'm going by DMM readings not just what Afterburner says (although adding +100mV to the card via Afterburner = ~98mV on my Fluke DMM, and +200mV = +194mV on DMM; still, pretty close). That said, having to use an "old" version of Afterburner to maintain voltage control is unfortunate, but not a deal-breaker.

The reason I'm saying "hopefully 6GB" is that the Classifieds were available as 4GB cards, and the Lightning's for the 580 were available as 1.5 and 3GB cards... So I'm hoping that they'll toss some nicely binned IC's totaling 4GB in there along with the upgraded VRM's... Working on a custom 2-stage Phase Change cooler, so looking to become more competitive in HWBot wink.gif Still have about 25-30 "old" (and OLD) GPU's, 35-40 old CPU's, and about 250 sticks of RAM, all of which are different, to torture in search of some magical HWBot Points biggrin.gif Perhaps I'll console myself for the lack of 6GB Voltage-Unlocked 780's by killing a bunch of old C2D/C2Q/A64/A64x2/A64 FX/P4/P4-EE/Pentium-D/Celeron/P III/Opteron CPU's, TNT2/GeForce4 MX420/440/Voodoo5 5500/Radeon SDR+DDR/Radeon 7000/FX5xxx/Radeon 8xxx/FX6xxx/Radeon 9xxx/FX7xxx/Radeon X8xxx + X1xxx/GeForce 8xxx & 9xxx/Radeon HD2xxx + 3xxx/GeForce 2xxx (and some even older ones that I can't remember the names of... talking mid 90's), and everything from RAMBUS to SDR to DDR PC100/133 through DDR2-1066 and DDR3-2400 RAM sticks/kits wink.gif

You can SLI those babies later and single die is always better(in terms of problem less gaming and driver support.) than some wacky sli config.

For benchmarking it comes in handy to get acquainted with a soldering iron, it unlocks voltage on pretty much any card. Just about every gpu before the 400 series needs hardmodding for any kind of extra voltage, practicing with the iron on the cheap older cards is good preparation for the newer ones that look like they will all be voltage locked.

You will love the cascade, when I got one it made me wonder why I waited so long! I wish I had that much different memory, still working on a collection but not even close to that...
