So the abstract and the actual report conflict each other? Odd.

I don't consider anyone that plays Call of Duty a console gamer.. See what I did there? I made a completely irrational statement based on my OPINION and not on the facts of markets or numbers. PC gaming is a larger and growing market. I have no idea why anyone would say otherwise unless they had an agenda.
I don't believe I've ever said casual games don't make more money. I just said not everyone wants to make (or play) casual games. Of the people who would naturally identify themselves as gamers, the marketsize of consoles is quite a bit larger. People who boot up Farmville, Solitaire, or Angry Birds (and not any other games) rarely think of themselves as gamers. Often, they don't even recognize those three as falling under the umbrella of "video games".

There are absolutely times when PCs are the better market- when your target audience is either A) Casual gamers or B) Enthusiasts. Outside of a couple genres like MMOs and RTS, PC is not a wisely chosen lead platform for most AAA games. You pick a platform after, not before, picking a target audience. Once you've got a target audience selected, the market shifts significantly.

Infact the narrative was "this is the ONLY acceptable type of DRM".

Now that this acceptable DRM has spread to consoles, it has become unacceptable lmao.

I laughed when people supported Steam whined about Origin/Uplay and the thought of any more clients, but I think I'll be laughing even harder now that the PC gamers favourite DRM is on console and apparently its a really bad thing.

I'm not surprised people complain so much about companies not listening when the people complaining don't seem to even know what they actually want in the first place.

We are so often on opposite sides of issues like these.

You are doing something which is a common tactic, you are giving a reason for an argument some people have that those people are not making.
You say you laughed when people who supported Steam "whined" (another tactic employed to minimize the legitimacy of someone's views without having to make an actual argument) about Origin/Uplay and more clients.
The people who are complaining about Origin or Uplay are mostly not complaining about the existence of competitors to Steam, there are LOTS of competitors, GOG.com, Humble Bundle, Greenman Gaming, etc. and no one complains about them.
People don't like Origin particularly because the client sucks and EA has been keeping their big titles exclusive to it. Valve keeps their big titles exclusive to Steam and I think that sucks. The thing many people don't like about UPlay is that it needs to be installed and launched no matter where you bought the game from. So if I buy Far Cry Blood Dragon I have to launch Steam, launch the game, and THEN UPlay launches before I can really launch the game. That sucks.
I for one am not particularly bothered by the used games restrictions on the next consoles. I understand why console gamers would be, as they are used to being able to sell their games, lend them to friends and family, and trade them, etc.
It would be great if game licenses of all types, PC, consoles, mobile, were transferable. That would be best for consumers for sure. It is hard to argue as a consume that a transferable license is a bad thing for us gamers and I am fairly confident you and I can at least agree on that.

The real reason you can't compare the markets is because the face book games are not available on the consoles. That is a completely separate market. You could just as well compare toaster sales to console sales. The people buying them are doing different things. Call of Duty is sold on the console and is sold on the PC so it can be compared. You can call both markets "gamers" and by gamers I mean that they are doing the same activity but on different platforms.

The real gaming market these days is probably phone apps if you really wanted to talk numbers though

Microsoft is using a wierd but effective strategy to introduce features through rumors and then confirmation through the response on Internet. Nice move Microsoft. i think just like always online rumors these ones are also overblown, the final Xbox One will be able to play USED GAMES!! the question is not of yes or no, but how, whether they will charge a fees or something else remains to be seen. Wish i am correct. thumb.gifbiggrin.gif

Well, we're in a forum where we have some pretty critical thinkers who're going to ask all the "but what if" questions. Microsoft can't answer each and every one of those questions up front. They're just creating buzz, not holding a Q&A. However, being overly vague has put off a lot of people who're quick to make rash decisions or jump on the PS4 bandwagon (even though the PS4 ironically has the same intrusive features except for a kinect equivalent)

Always hated that comparison...

Let's compare incomes and expenditures.

Movies cost comparable or higher to games, but don't rely on DVD sales as the only profits they actually care about are Theater tickets, which, you can't resell after using. Try recording a movie at the theater or using a video chat to have a friend tag along without paying and see what happens.

Music have insignificant costs comparable to games, but also have concerts and radio stations (advertising profits) in addition to individual sales, which, comparing a $60 game to a ~$15 CD, games cost significantly more than 4x more to make.

Books are dirt cheap to produce except for a couple authors that can really push sales, but even those are cheap compared to games. Harry Potter 7 has sold over 44 million copies. I only know of one game that's broken 35 million and it cheated (Wii Sports being tied to console).

Games? We get game sales and that's about it. Supplementing that with advertising is absurdly opposed for some reason. Supplementing it with DLC is opposed for illogical reasons. Trying to boost sales by removing illegitimate users? Opposed.
