Hard Drive RPM... Why?

Most common spindle speeds: 3600, 4200, 4500, 5200, 5400, 7200, 10000, 12000, 15000. Does anyone know why manufacturers selected these particular values? Rep+ since the answer is probably obscure.

Speeds are are hard thing to define in the way you ask. I think it just comes into the Equation of the HDD build/Architecture..Not all too sur on a technical answere.

Don't know why they chose those values for speed, but I do know that there is some 10800 RPM drives out there. My guess is that those values were chosen because that is the fastest that they could get the drive. For example, when they came out with the 5400 RPM drives, that was top of the line. So instead of spending money to make it 5600 RPM, they dumped money into research for something even faster, and go 7200 RPM, a new limit.....and then on up to 15000. Just my guess though.

The flaw there is.... why do all manufactors make 7200RPM drives? It's not like they all happen to research the same exact speeds. It's also obviously not due to the number of platters since it varies with 7200RPM HDs. Why don't some manufactors make 8000RPM or others make 7000RPM? The spindle speed has no impact on the system as long as the OS can get the data. Why then the fix values across manufactors? Why these magic numbers?

This must just be some kind or "benchmarking reference"
By using the same speed reference, Hard disk manufacturers are able to compare their product to another manufacturer's... And so that customers can also choose which Drive is best for each speed class...
But then again, these numbers might as well be just random ones...

That doesn't make sense either... HD performance is based on their Read/Write times, transfer rate, cache, ect. No benchmark actually tests spindle speeds. They just provide it for informational purpose. Why would manufactors want to be the same? Release a faster HD... make more money. Not make what everyone else is make and hope they like your name better. It is does not seem to be a random number... there's too much of an order to it. Just can't figure out what it is.

Generally the faster the Spible rate the faster the DATA reads/ACCESS. There is a relation.

I believe THIS is your answer
EDIT : In short, the faster the spindle is, the more "environmental" problem it creates. Adds more heat, vibrations, noise, and so on... 7,200 RPM is a desktop standard as it is a speed that doesn't create much heat, much noise, yet it is fast enough for most PC users !

Nope, that only says faster is harder to do. It doesn't explain why it is 7200RPM, not 7400RPM or 6999RPM.
