if I have 4 memory slots on mobo and want to upgrarde 8gb --> 16gb, will it perform better with 4 sticks?

I have kind of an annoying heatsink fan that partially blocks one of the memory slots I'm not using. In the future I would want to upgrade my 8gb or ram up to 16gb. I could do this with a 2 X 8GB setup and replace my current 2 X 4GB set up. My question is, does using 4 X 4GB make things work better than if I used 2 X 8GB? my mobo can handle up to 4 X 8GB if that means anytyhing. thanks

I personally would go for a 2 x 8GB setup, purely for the sake of if in the unlikely chance that you'd need more than 16GB you can upgrade, but also because there's less chance of one of the two sticks failing compared to the fail-rate of 4 sticks.
