Good spray painting results

I want to get pretty good at spray painting this summer, for a build I'm planning late this summer. Last time I attempted spray painting something were some plastic pieces of a cooler master 690ii advanced. Came out terrible. I used some type of kyrlon spray paint.

IF I was to spray paint something like a old metal side panel to a case what should I do? I'm not looking for mirror finish but something somewhat glossly.

I'm sure i need, 200-300 grit sand paper, 500grit sandpaper, 700grit sand paper, primer, spray paint

is that realistically it? any good guides?

Try this one. I've been using it to test-spray my things too.
