95% Sure HDD is burned out, but what do you guys think?

Short:
Burning smell + tripping power supply to not power on = burned HDD? HDD is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB.

Long:
In the process of helping my brother with his computer to reinstall windows, I think I may have fried one of his hard drives. His power supply only had connections for 2 HDDs and he had 2 in there already, so we tried unplugging one so that I plug in my spare for him to back up things on. It didn't work, and trying to get things back the way they were resulted in not being able to get into windows. So then I took his 2 HDDs and tried plugging them into our other brother's PC, which resulted in the computer not wanting to power up at all, and there was a burning electrical smell. I quickly took them out and had to turn off the power supply for a few seconds in order to get the PC to power on again. Next, I brought those HDDs back home to try it in my PC and was able to back up his main drive using my docking port, but his other drive failed to be seen by windows. Finally, I tried just plugging it in normally not through my docking port and it seemed to "trip" my power supply as well and also had to flip the switch in order to get it booting again.

So what do you guys think? As I said in title, I'm almost positive it's a gonner, but someone may prove me wrong otherwise.

Thanks in advance, +REP to helpful replies! smile.gif

I am afraid you are right, it does sound like the HDD is fried.
There are some guides around the internet with people trying to bring back their dead HDD's dont know if that is something you are willing to try?

*just wondering, but does it show up in BIOS?*

The fried HDD was secondary so I don't think there is anything valuable on it, and I'd imagine he would rather just have a new HDD rather than some zombie drive haha.

As for bios, I was not able to see it while it was in my docking port, and when directly hooking it up to my mobo is when it would trip the PSU, so I couldn't even post.

Make that 101% sure, in the shape it is, you are risking more than just that drive.

Off Topic: reminds me of my old 10gb hard drive that was in a house fire and got charred, but when i plugged it in it was working like nothing happened (love Maxtor drives so reliable to me biggrin.gif)

OT: it's history, sucks though that it happened.

Quantem FIREBALL!!!!!!

anyways..... if you have access to external sata port and maybe some usb -> sata power adapter than i'd say that is your only chance of getting this to turn on. If the HDD didn't want to boot in multiple systems then i'd say that thing is cooked. I had a HDD with a couple really bad sectors and it refused to boot almost any pc except for my linux box which it just didn't care lol.
