Invest in some air cooling to OC i7 920 or upgrade outright?

Thread Starter
So I'm looking to potentially upgrade my system (sig rig) and wanted to get your thoughts as to whether it would ultimately be worth forking out for a new system or go the chearp route and keep my i7 920 and invest in some solid air cooling to OC it?

It's primarily used for gaming. Would perhaps just OCing + GPU upgrade be fine for increased performance or would my CPU just end up becoming a bottleneck for some of the new cards out there?

Recommendations for coolers would be most appreciated also.

I would just overclock your i7-920. performance difference in games isn't that much versus current CPUs.
If you still need more performance then upgrade GPUs.

i7-920 @4.2GHz vs i7-3770k @4.2GHz using GTX 680

if you want to go prebuild custom loop the Swiftech H220 would be a good option.
you could upgrade it to include your GPUs along with extra radiators.

if u want to oc maybe the nh-d14 is a great cooler

Overclock your CPU and you will be fine for more 10fps at most its not worth the cost of a board and cpu. Take a look at Thermalright HR-02 Macho very good price/performance as for the top coolers you have Noctua NH-D14 and Phanteks tc14 bit expensive though.
Overclock. Unless you play a lot of SC2 or the Total War series, there's not going to be much gain by changing CPU generations.

I'd suggest an HR-02 Macho for $55 if you want good performance & a quiet fan all at the same time.
http://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-Macho-Support-Socket-Driver/dp/B009MS326U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369437254&sr=8-1&keywords=HR-02+Macho

If you want to spend more for slightly better performance than the HR-02 Macho while still staying quiet, look at a Noctua NH-D14.
The high-end Phanteks are about as good as the Noctua NH-D14 but are louder, so I wouldn't consider them.

If you just want a light overclock you can often get a Xigmatek Gaia at Newegg for cheap.

If you want cheap performance and don't give a crap about noise, get a CoolerMaster 212+ Evo.
