If you want to believe the information, only around 30% of Americans have a fixed boradband subscription. On a global scale, 90-10% of the world have access to a 24/7 broadband connection. It's obvious you live a privileged life, but don't think everyone in the wolrd, or even America has access to the luxuries you have.

I don't live a privileged life, I'm a realist.

What your information fails to acknowledge is how many of those 30% actually own a game system, much less, an Xbox to begin with.

...Do your stats show the target market of the Xbox? Oh, no they don't...Well, how about the demographic of those that even own an Xbox in that 30%? Oh, no they don't...Well, how about the portion of Americans that own an Xbox now, in comparison to those that would if they actually had internet? Oh, no they don't. Well, how about even those that could afford to own an Xbox in the opposing 70%? Oh, no they don't. What about the 9-10% of the world...Are they currently Xbox owners or how about Playstation owners?

If you use statistics in the future, it would be nice to have the other relevant information as opposed to skewing what existing information you have, to your benefit when the only suitable conclusion we can come to, with the information that you provided, is that 30% of Americans have 24/7 internet. Nothing more, nothing less.

And another thing: if a company would just come out and say the following: "we require you to be online. Why? Piracy." I'd respect that and I'd buy the console.

Actually it sounds like you will need an Internet connection for everything. It may not used the connection at all times, but an Internet Connection is "Required" to use the Xbox. Even if you are playing nothing but single player games. LINK to latest Interview that I've seen

Though it does sound like you can use it to play movies without ever having it touch the Internet in some interviews I've read, but even single player games will need to verify your live account.

Though I am sure it could all change yet.

Just to help with this post;

http://www.vgchartz.com/#graph_menu

According to that there are a total of 77.3 million XBOX360's sold.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population

And world population is around 7 billion.

And in North America alone again, using the 2 sites above

44 million XBOX360's sold in North America
528,720,588 population of North America ( 2011 )

I'm too tired to do the math but I can guestimate and say in terms of both North America and World, that the XBOX360's estimated sales doesn't come anywhere near the 10% (world) and 30% (NA) of people in those regions with active 24/7 internet connections.

That's exactly what i wanted to said. I was just responding this statement of yours : "very very few people don't have a 24/7 internet connection". 70% of the population of your country is quite the big number. I never mentioned anything about the number of xbox and playstation sales, I couldn't care less about that.

And yes, You and I both DO live privileged lifes, there's people out there starving, getting poisoned with contaminated water, living the horrors of war, destroying their lungs in coal mines, etc. while we argue about a videogame console and how you run your computing systems 24\7.

Look at the percentage of single player games compared to multi on consoles over the past @ 10 years -- You'll see a significant decline.

Again, welcome to the new world...It is what it is.

In this day and age, you're hard pressed to find people willing to buy a next gen console that aren't willing to pay for internet/wifi. Yes, there are rural areas where internet isn't as reliable or cost effective as in the more populated areas, but Microsoft is targeting the majority of the potential customers, not the minority. (Here in the USA anyways, international sales have never been great for Microsoft consoles)

I don't like the policy, but I also don't like the console so most likely won't be purchasing anyways. I think Microsoft missed the mark in nearly every aspect, and wouldn't be surprised if it flops.

Tell you what, I'll retract my statement since it was implied rather then stated and offer the following: In the year 2013, very very few people OWN AN XBOX that don't have a 24/7 internet connection.

If you don't have a 24/7 internet connection, the chances that you'll own an Xbox 360/One are incredibly low.

Their demographic and target audience are clearly, people with the internet.

Even still. They target demographic for an always on XBOX is obviously not the 90% without internet. It doesn't matter who does or doesn't have an always on connection. It's a matter of do enough people have it that they could sell these to make a profit? And this would also increase the demand for always on interenet...maybe increasing is prevelence from 30%..(BTW 30% is from 2011...def outdated stat).

I really have no issue with the always on connection if they made it that way...it's what they use it for that bothers me. And I don't like the policies regarding used games or trading games etc. That is where they are violating the rights of consumers. Always on internet is a luxury...selling used games or trading games is my right.

Bulldust. Out of the 8 Xbox 360 owners I know 3-4 of them don't have access to a reliable home internet connection. They do what little they need to on public computers and my 3G tether when I'm over.
Plus, even if we have perfectly working internet...MS might not, overloaded servers anyone?

Seriously, so many 18-25 or so year olds who don't have big internet requirements but still want to game just get consoles and run them offline, it's a core demographic.

Just because you view it as the core demographic, doesn't make it Xbox's target market.

The Xbox One is aimed at those with a 24/7 internet connection...Period.

If they choose to change that, that's their prerogative but, at the moment, their target demographic is those with High Speed internet connections and that's the VAST MAJORITY of their market.
