Gigabyte GTX 280 1GB - Cooling Question?

Hi Everyone,
A mate of mine gave me his old GTX 280 to play around with. When I opened the card I noticed that the white pads on the memory chips were all massicated and clogged with dust. So i removed them completely leaving the memory chips exposed and completely removing and replacing the chalky GPU paste with AS5.

Anyway my question is this, Is the GPU going to work despite having no 'pads' on the memory chips? Keep in mind I wont be overclocking this card at all, It will say at stock speeds.

Keep in mind this is not my card above, This is just an example of what the pads look like :3

Also i have removed the back plate to give the chips more air, Is this a good idea or should i put the back plate back on?

With all the heat that goes along with the 200 series cards I would not suggest running it without the thermal pads on the memory. I still run a 280 card, and replace the thermal paste and pads every 6-8 months or so. The backplate should give some heat relief but if you're not going to run the thermal pads might be best to keep it off. Do you have decent air flow through the case?

Where can I pick up some pads? I can't find them on 'PCCaseGear' or 'CentreCom'?

Edit: I will have airflow running over the chips above from the CPU. The case it will be going in is a Sharkoon T9. So air will go directly from the top and the front and from the GPU itself.

I have used these but anything that can be cut to fit it good as well.

That link isn't for the right one.. can't seem to find the cheaper one I used. but really any of the brands that offer the cut to fit is okay.

Will the card work fine despite having lots of airflow on it and AS5 on the main chip? Keep in mind it wont be overclocked.

Well I think it may be okay, just running stock. With anything trial and error. Just make sure to keep an eye on temps. Other than that I would say maybe put the backplate on and see if that makes any diff.

I have ran 200 series cards without the pads in short term, but if you are going to be stressing the card at all, you will want them on. More importantly, the thermal pads on the voltage circuitry towards the rear of the card should be in place at all times.

Well the most stressful game this card will be running is probably BF3.

OK, I will probably be buying Thermal Tape seeing as a lot of people are recommending to put it on. Will this do?
