first real water cooling loop

post #1 of 19

I have been reading and searching a lot lately about water cooling and took the plunge to do my own. Riight now I have the Corsair H60 I think it is, its the cpu closed loop. My temps load is around 55c idle is around 30c. Ambient is roughly 75F (A/C is not in the bedroom yet). that is with 6x120mm fans total on the case. I will note that the temperature has been rising the past 2months, the corsair has been on for about 2.5years now.

So far I have the copper heater core from an older bonneville with 2x120mm fans, and my friend is machining some copper water blocks. The CPU water block is going to be copper base, and acrylic top so its see through, and the GPU blocks will be similar, or may be solid copper. The gpu blocks are still a work in progress, not sure which I want yet. Radiator is a 3" PVC with a fill port on top, and two hos barb fittings for the in and out. Water pump is still undecided, going to see what my options are later tonight. Tubing will be 3/8", since that is what I have on hand. Guess this could be called a budget/ back yard build smile.gif

I am thinking the loop will go like this.....
reservoir - > pump -> radiator -> cpu -> gpu's -> back to reservoir ?

Anyways, will I see a huge difference between the Corsair closed loop versus my custom setup? I am not looking for any world records, just curious if I will notice a difference. Trying to make things a little less noisy in the computer case, GF complains the computer sounds like a jet taking off.

I hope to have some pictures sometime this weekend. The blocks look much like the chinese blocks (I like the transparent look) but my friend is machining them. He can machine anything, so its not a huge task for him. So the loop will be all copper, no aluminum or any other metal. Cooling will be distilled water with the additives that are recommended in another thread I saw, can''t think of the names of them right now.

I have to make a few modifications to my current case, since I am adding a side window and the green cathode lighting. The reservoir will be outside of the case, and the radiator will be on the inside at the top. Going for the black and green look smile.gif.

lol GF was sick of my black and blue theme that I have had for the past two years, so she said while I was changing stuff I might as well change the blue to green. I didn't care since I like blue and green the same.

Well got the loop working with my Kuhler 620 radiator for now..... replaced the water block with one my friend machined up for me. So far the temps are 3degrees lower at idle, haven't tried a load yet.

Some quick pictures I took. Nothing spectacular, and I need to do some cable management inside/ buy a modular PSU.

Quick question --

anyone think I will notice a difference between a 151 mm (H) x 120 mm (W) x 27 mm (Stock Kuhler620) vs a XSPC RS240 240mm radiator?

I do plan on cooling my 2 GPUs so I don't think the Kuhler620 rad will be sufficient enough for that.

Quick answer -- Yes!
And is that your only rad? because it won't be enough for 2 gpu's and cpu.

Yeah, right now I only have my CPU cooled with the small Kuhler radiator, keeping the temps about 10degrees higher then ambient, which is better then what it was with the full kuhler setup.

it will be better but if you plan to do cpu + 2 gpu, a 240 wont be enough. you would need more along the lines of the 240 + that bonne rad at least.
