[ExpertReviews] HSA + AMD APUs means 500% increases in application performance

Thread Starter

Just going to go on a bit of a whim here and post this quote from Expert Reviews on what HSA is going to bring to the world of modern computing.

Quote:

What makes you so confident that HSA is the future?

You hear about (Intel's upcoming CPU) Haswell getting 10% CPU improvements over the previous generation. If you ask some of the developers enabling HSA in their applications, they are seeing five times the performance – that's 500%.

FULL INTERVIEW HERE

You can read more about HSA through the link "What is HSA" in my sig. Hopefully that'll get some discussion going thumb.gif

Very good article. HSA seem like the next logical step after OpenCL/CUDA.
Making it easy for programmers to use the full power of a system.

Free performance boost while saving electricity. thumb.gif

Whell.. I think AMD has done good job on CPU + GPU already with their support to OpenCL, but this HSA has a bit bad sound in it. Even the idea is good, it's all already basically possible by doing the application run on all hardware there is. It's of course some more work, but then again, it doesn't rely on any platform that much. HSA sounds a bit like another Java or DotNet - which both just suck - as all these common platform things very often do.

Very excited to see the full HSA APU's in action. I read somewhere else they may have integrated GDDR5 between the GPU/CPU on top of system memory. That would be pretty sweet.

Edited: Found it - Source

I'm mostly looking forward to OCing and how it will perform with a Dedicated GPU for Gaming.

Folding is already AMD playground since it's OpenCL now.

Adobe Premiere & After Effects is next (2014)...

AMD's GPU side is going to reach critical mass soon

HSA would be the culmination of this "MOAR CORES" AMD philosophy , what has more cores in a PC than a GPU
Quote:
The difference can be huge; what we're saying is that the CPU isn't the most important part of a system any more. If you want massive performance gains, you need to enable the GPU and use both.

Is there a danger that most of the Compute applications currently available are focused on industry applications like 3D rendering and video encoding, rather than everyday programs we would use at home?

Internet explorer or Chrome are very much mainstream applications. Flash 11.1 is another. You see huge gains enabling GPU acceleration, even in web browsers like these. I think the reason there are more professional applications is because at this point you can only have guys who know how to program for the GPU. But that's the point of HSA, to bring it to the mainstream programmers so they can take advantage of that in a simple and easy way, optimising and programming with it for everything.

edit: I think APUs will proliferate like Android did , crushing RIM Blackberry Windows Phone and Symbian OS. The HSA foundation reminds me of the Open Handset alliance. For everything that is a parallel workload the HSA idea is far superior to higher clockspeed or 10% increase in IPC.

This Fusion HSA stuff is simply amazing ,to bad it took so much time to get in the business
Slowly the old CPU-s are becoming legacy.
AMD changed the game and this is good for all the industry.
