Edit: Just remember, no one opinion is better than anyone elses. It is perfectly okay not to "hate" the Xbox One, just don't expect the majority to agree with you on this one.

For whatever reason, you still seem to be mixing up peoples thoughts on the reveal with what their overall opinion is of the actual console.

Your poll questions relate to peoples perception of the event, but your narrative regarding the "majority" seems to be linked to whether people like the console or not.

Its perfectly possible for a person to have thought the reveal was a bust, but still be interested in what MS has to show further down the line.

I don't think anyone in their right minds expects that all XBO cosists of is television, EA Sports, Forza and Call of Duty.

Very disappointing, nobody wants a locked down low spec PC / TV box, rather build my own high spec rig that's isn't controlled or require camera's watching me to function. The flipside is the Xbox One being such an utter travesty will hopefully steer some more gamers towards the PC...

I didn't get to see the whole reveal but from most of what I have gathered it does seem they will disappoint gamers.

On the flip side aside from some privacy concerns they have me interested in putting one in each room of my house for my tv's. tongue.gif Especially in the bed room. thumb.gif

So they are pretty much leaving the gamers behind but I won't game on console anyway so doesn't bother me much. redface.gif

If they hit their demographics right they are showing a good foundation to include mum and dud's everywhere. biggrin.gif Keeps the youngins off the pc and in front of TV.

Edit: Oh yeah, everyone is just arguing opinions with opinions, so it's kinda like chasing ones own tail.

The first impression is what a company (if it is competent enough) aims for the console, so either Microsoft is not competent and naively thinks that we live in a perfectly rational and segmented world where "Let's do a vague specs announcement and talk about the new features at this event and then let's just give a teaser for the games at the end in order to make the connection for E3 in a few weeks" actually makes sense, or they did in fact do everything according to plan and effectively changed their core audience for the device.

I don't believe the first one to be right, because this shows a pattern as of late: they are just inept at making a product lately, they disregard their core audience, putting their targeted new audience first.... exactly like they did with Windows 8. It's no wonder people are disappointed, Microsoft shows no respect for their user base and tries to leverage the brand name to try to conquer new markets.

Thenn they will spend huge amounts of time and money to try to win back their original customers. Why does Microsoft have to have all this drama ?
At this point I have to say: why does almost every single one of your posts warrant looking at your avatar and saying to myself: yep, perfect match. biggrin.gif

You are actually answering your own question here.

Does the first impression of a console and its base functionality sell the bulk of units?

Or does the first impression of a game (or other piece of content for that matter) that knocks people off their feet and pulls open their wallets sell units?

Did Uncharted sell PS3 boxes, or did their E3 PS3 reveal sell boxes?

Did Xbox Live on the 360 bringing the first generation of fleshed out online console gaming keep them in the consumers good books, or was it that the 360 looked nice?

Why was Gears of War/Halo important for the 360 last gen?

Why was Metal Gear Solid important for the PS3 last gen?

Why was Gran Turismo important for the PS3 last gen? Why was its huge delay and luke warm response even more important?

Why did the PS3 original reveal and all the ooh and aah about how it will beast the 360 mean almost nothing when it released? "PS3 has no g_m_s"?

Why did the Wii survive (or almost dominate tbh) a generation where it was the "weakest", "poorly developed", yet "unique" dog in the pack?

Why is the Wii U seeming to struggle this time around?

Because the composition of content matters, almost above all else.

If the first time we saw a game like Watchdogs was at Microsofts E3 presentation (pretending its an exclusive for now) and we were all similarly blown away, is the narrative after going to be:
Quote:
"man that game looked awesome!! I want to play that game!"

or is it going to be,
Quote:
"Wow! That game looked awesome! Too bad I wont be playing it because they didn't show me this at their reveal #never forget "
?

Which of those is the most likely outcome?

It almost does not matter what people's first impressions are at the official reveal, because 10/10 rated reveals do not sell units. It might have an influence sure, but if the content isn't there, nobody is buying regardless.

If they deliver content that people want, people will buy. That's almost literally all it comes down to (although pricing is quite important too).

Whether they announce that content today, tomorrow, a year from now, five years. It doesn't matter.

If they deliver an XBO game that people want to play, XBO units will sell.

The quality of their reveal will mean nothing a year from now. Not a soul will care, because in the grand scheme people want content, not stage shows.

Personally did not care or watched it. Never was exited about Consoles and have owned so many of them. PSP was the last thing i actually used to play games. Anything after that has been purely PC. With all the changes in PC gaming i think its much easier for people these days to play PC games. A lot of PC gamers play F2P which consoles dont offer.

I am pretty disappointed with the XBox One. I was hoping for more focus on gaming. Like others have said, no one cares that its going to me a media center. It was something that didnt need to be said. We saw this coming from a mile away with the way the 360 and the PS3 added ways to store and stream media etc...

We buy video game consoles to play video games. Great that is can do all this extra stuff... what a bonus. They didnt show me the games or the game play.

Specs wise im not happy either. Yes, it will be way better than the 360, but thats a given. The 360 is 8 years old. I would have liked this hardware to be even better, faster, beefier concerning that this will probably have to last us another 8 years. I know specs are not everything, but im trying to get behind something here to invest in. Either way, MS should have outdid PS4 on the hardware, and the way it is looking, PS4 probably gets the nudge here.

Maybe its my rant, idk. But I love the 360. Even today. I was just hoping for something more.

I loved the reveal watched it on twit, I wished they showed of some of the games like Sony did but it also makes a lot of sense to show them off at E3. I understand that a lot of people are not happy with the lack of information at the time but its no reason to not wait for E3 and see what they have to show. But no matter what happens I think I will still be picking one up latter this year I may not use the media features but I just love Forza and even tho you have to pay for it Xbox live is just a batter on live services verses PSN.
It's going to come down to price. If it's $500+ for XBO with Kinect, it's going to annoy gamers because they're not going to want to pay for all the extra crap.

If it's $400 or less, the extra crap should be less of a concern. Just don't use it. Some of you act as if this thing is going to be marginally better than a 360, and a lot worse than a PS4 because of the difference in RAM. I think both perceptions are flat out wrong.

I'm leaning towards a PS4 personally, mostly because I'm not going to pay for Xbox Live.

But again, it's all about the price tag.

Ps. The walls of text some post here are ridiculous. People - learn to be concise on the internet, no one is reading otherwise.

You're playing with semantics...

The reveal sets the stage for the product in the consumer's mind, which is why they spend so much time, effort and money putting them together. We actually studied this in a marketing class I was forced to take; if you botch the initial introduction of the product and fail to generate interest and desire for the product right away, it's very difficult to catch back up, particularly in a competitive market.

The XBox brand has a very specific target audience: gamers. I can't think of one person that I know that bought an XBox strictly as an entertainment center, all of them bought it as a gaming platform first. Even if your product does a whole lot of other cool stuff that people outside your existing target market might like, you don't make those features the focus of the reveal otherwise you end up alienating your brand's target market.

It's kind of a rookie mistake... Unless they think that console gaming is on it's way out, which it very well could be thanks to cell phones and tablets. Microsoft may be hoping to shift the brand... either way, they didn't do it very gracefully.
