However, I will point out that this is one of those very rare occasions where the population of Overclock.net and gaming news sites are actually a very good sample of the target market. Based on what's being presented, it's very hard to deny that Microsoft has an uphill battle to be won.

Well think about it this way in terms of the image of the XBO.

How much overall marketing is going to go towards gaming and how much is going to go towards the fact that it has an HDMI input?

They are going to release (I think they said) 8 new and original IP within the first year of XBO, including their existing exclusives and many more third party titles.

What area of the console is going to be the most commented on?

There is only so much a static feature can be flaunted until it becomes common knowledge or nobody cares anymore. Funny enough, at which point fanboy wars start and that small thing you have that your "enemy" console doesn't have turns into a HUGE thing "oh, PS3 doesn't have cross game chat hur dur, xbl is so much better. Nobody talks on PSN hur dur".

Until I buy a 360 (even though I already have a PS3) literally because of the praise of these things and lo and behold cross game chat just annoys me (hearing people eat crips and talk about crap kind of kills the immersion) and I now instinctively and pro-actively mute anybody I hear make a peep of noise in a game lobby.

We will indeed have to see how it goes, and yes MS do seem to have an uphill battle, but I don't think the battle itself is as large as is made out to be in the first place, especially given that they haven't actually started fighting yet and I know nobody truly thinks MS put all their bets on a CoD engine movie, a short Forza teaser and an EA Sports engine seminar.

I'll tell you what I took away from the reveal. There are entirely too many companies teaching the wrong way to speak in front of people. I was so distracted by the myriad of unnecessary hand gestures by every single speaker to listen to most of what they said. It looked so fake and contrived that I basically figured everything they said was as dishonest as the way they were presenting it.

Other than that, I didn't really see too much to even be impressed by. Cloud computing? Who cares, I think it's dumb and impractical anyway. Kinect? Yawn. It can read your heartbeat? Why would I need that, or even allow something like that in my house? I should really trust Microsoft by keeping a camera that they have access to in my living room. Yeah, right.

Option 1:

Spend your own time in your own organised show, talking about what you want to talk about, especially updates to operating systems, Kinect improvements and "extra curricular" features.

Take some flack for not showing enough new games, but at least you got to reveal details not particularly suited to E3 out of the way and have some ammo left to hit people with where it matters with E3 actually just weeks away.

People can't stop talking about your console. Vision in markets increase, maybe negatively (no such thing as negative press blah blah), but with the opportunity to turn those question marks and initial frowns upside down with big announcements.

Option 2:

Do a Sony, except without the benefit of E3 not being a few weeks away, making repeat announcements potentially damaging for the impact of your annual presentation.

Spend a large chunk of time saying everything possible about hardware, architecture, networks you've been building, then make big announcements regarding games that will only grate on people if you attempt to announce them again at E3.

Still have people complain that you spent too long talking about TV and Kinect at E3, while many of your "big announcements" were just disappointing repeats from two weeks ago.

Option 3:
Attempt to both reveal your new console and its games in one E3 session.

Get people whining about how you dared to try to explain the improvements you made to Kinect, the architecture and only showed a montage of upcoming games.

Part of the vast majority of disappointed gamers. Whatever MS was trying to pull, they screwed up totally on it. Appeal to the hardcore market with next-gen graphics? Revealed lots of useless numbers that don't mean anything. Shift the core market to more casual/non-gaming audience? Ended up going face to face with many more entertainment companies in other markets (especially TV) and alienated a lot of people who would have bought the machine. Tried to drum up attention to their new console? Sent people towards competitors' consoles (i.e. PS4 & Wii U).

I can't help but feel like people just love to hate on things. Just like COD, all the flame it gets on the internet but it's still the No.1 sold game. I'm not liking much of anything im hearing about the xbox one including the name but I feel like all the flame its receiving will be mute when the sale numbers show up.

I hope it ends up like Windows 8 though. I'm really against all the privacy concerns and I usually don't have much of a issue with those things.

Imported a Xbox in December 2001 from the US for $699.
Bought a launch 360 for $399.

Will not be buying a "One" (god, I hate that name). Microsoft went out of their way to insult me as a customer, inviting EA on stage and paying the audience to clap was the last straw.
