670 SLI or 780? Torn

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
I currently have 570s in SLI, namely the MSI Frozr III which has ~1.3GB of VRAM. As of two weeks ago, I have a 1440p monitor... and I've heard that the 1.3GB is likely going to be capping me.

Anyways, to the point... my brother is upgrading his 670 to a 780. He is offering to sell me the 670 for $150.

My thoughts, I can sell the 570s... then buy the 670 from my brother, get another 670 off ebay or from a seller here... and make magic happen. OR I can outright buy a 780.

670 SLI = $150 (from bro) + $300 (from ebay?) = $450 <--- hopefully this gets cheaper in the coming weeks too, since the 7 series may drive down the price.

OR

780 = $600

I'm really torn here because 150 for a 670 is a steal but it is your brother.

When I went from 670 SLI to a single Titan I was really disapointed, since you are comparing it to a 780 which is just a little slower, IMO 670 SLI all the way.

That's interesting. Is there a website that aggregates benchmark scores?

One thing I'm worried about is the lack of VRAM. Apparently 2GB may not even be enough for 1440p games? I'm not sure if this is hype or not though.

I'm running 1440P and 2GB was enough for Crysis3 at max settings and MSAA, though it was close to the limit. The thing with a single 780 is, you will probably not be pushing enough power to break 2GB at playable settings. Now if SLI 780 is a possibility in the future then yes 780 all the way.

I have a EVGA 670 FTW and a 2560x1440 Dell u2713hm. It runs alot of games very well. Most of the detail settings are between high and medium on newer games. And it looks much crisper than when I was using a 1080p monitor with maxed out settings. So long as you're not picky you can get away with a single 670. A second would be a bonus. The main reason I'm personally is that I play AvP. And it hits roughly 1.8 gb of the 2gb of vram on max settings.

its not hype at least if you want to max things out with high levels of AA or have mods in your games (like skyrim).

for me PERSONALLY, thats why i got rid of my 670 FTW SLI, because it would go over 2gb and it was unpleasant. but yes the remedy will be to turn down settings . but 670 SLI will be faster than one gtx 780 at this point in time.

LOVE MY 670'S..I think the 780 is over priced for 3Gb. I would rather get the 7990 if I was willing to pay out that much cash or the Titan.
